Love this wall, seen from a bus trundling down Possil Rd to Rockvilla, Glasgow. Railway line runs over the top, it seems to be built of huge sheets of sandstone(?) rather than hewn blocks like a normal...wall. My best guess is the holes were for moving these mammoth chunks into position c1840?

Holiday sock knitting in ferocious Croatian heat. I am nothing if not determined. Thank chuff for air con in public transport. Autumn boot socks for back home in cold rainy Glasgow. #knitting #muchneededtimeoff

That's one hell of an additional load! I think there's so little recognition of all the extra skills mature women students bring and develop. We overcome many more mountains - often mundane, routine stuff, including parenting and care. I salute your extraordinary achievement, sister!

Nooooo, that's not on you! You adjusted expectations to her whim, that's the best you can do!

Can't help feeling that's a bit of a kicking when you've grafted hard (and presumably with non-adult children). Mum died three months into my PhD and had no idea what I was doing. So sad. But still, *we* know how much it takes - we should be independently proud!

It's that 'getting above yourself' thing isn't it? Nice women don't draw attention to their achievements. Always sad that my mum was descending into dementia when I started my PhD and dad had died at the start of my undergrad. They were very proud that I went to uni at all so I hold onto that.

I agree, principally because his family and friends need privacy and respite. This feels a bit performative and responding to *our* need to express anger, not what's best in the - as yet - unknown circumstances.

Exactly! I wonder if there's a connection with rising literacy rates among even the very poorest where previously letters were a bit pointless. I'm on a run with the project just now (it's a passion, separate from my paid research post), so I'll have a rummage and let you know.

Thanks, that helps. I hadn't thought about it till your brilliant post - I'll keep an eye on the records I'm reviewing to see when the poorest began to get their own house numbers.

Ellie Conway @bloominell.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Fascinating! Do you know when internal tenement apartments started to be numbered? Census shows 100s living at a single street number and tenants/boarders recorded by location within a building and name of householder/landlord by Poor Law inspectors in mid/late 19thc.

I wasn't arguing for a free pass, except for, well, everyone. Nobody deserves trial by social media. I don't think anyone can justify whipping one up (especially right now). Legal recourse is there, evidenced in many similar cases. But opting for an eye for an eye... I can't see Ince finding peace.

Yep,machine manufactured confections of data/analysis are quite the prospect. Another wall tumbling in the comprehensive collapse of academia and HE with clearly predictable real-life consequences. We are such a stupid species.

I went during last year's Open Doors thing, it's well worth it. Remarkable the preservation/development work they've done. I'd quite like to be let loose in the archive for an hour or two.

What a find! Govanhill Baths originally incorporated a washhouse and some of the original mechanisms have been preserved (as well as some bath cubicles), worth a visit for sense of space, albeit it's Glasgow not Edinburgh. They have an archive/archivist too.

I've seen this constantly framed as 'JK *suing* a human rights organisation' to suppress free speech. No doubt the apology will be seen as compelled by legal threats. Very, very tiresome. We still need to hear more - who the chuff thought it was ok to label a SA support service this way? Idiots.

We were church goers, but baptist (which was handy as we were regarded as neutral from a sectarian perspective - in a west coast 1970s Scottish town, this was priceless. Most churchy pals I had were Catholic, tbh.

First public performance tonight with my fellow absolute beginners classmates. Haven't been this nervous since I went into labour with my boy thirty years ago 😬

Not to be a dream bore, while totally being a dream bore, I dreamt I was in the car with my beloved, driving slowly down familiar but deserted streets in a strange mossy green twilight. I said "is it another lockdown?" then woke up. I'm carrying the vague discomfort of it still. Dreams, eh?

I've been wondering about this building for ages! What was it originally used as? Old maps suggest a bank at some point (presumably alongside lots of other businesses?)

Similar experience for me today. Student who came to see me several times to talk over using quite an advanced research method for an undergrad dissertation, and who was clearly very able but lacking in confidence, absolutely smashed it - A3. Today is a good day.

We're on our fifth holiday to South Uist, same cottage every time. It is beautiful. Eriskay is very small with little to do, but the pub, beach, the tiny wild ponies that trot the streets and the unique football pitch (Google it) make it worth a trip. Recommend staying on Uist and day visiting!

Ellie Conway @bloominell.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
We were in Am Politician pub on Eriskay for the last 20mins. The most Catholic of the islands, twas rammed with men in hoops. The air vibrating with aggression, lots of bemused tourists who had only seen the lilting tweed side of life thus far. The end of the match was outrageous. Commiserations ☹️

If it's superwash wool or says on the label you can, but I think they still tighten up a tad. I hand wash my knits in a bowl with a splash of wool detergent (you can get it in supermarkets) as I think it's less hard on them - keeps them brighter and softer. Also it's a rather meditative activity 😊

Coercive control is horrendous. It's very hard to pick your way through to reality when you're constantly being gaslit, so you've taken a big step forward acknowledging it and now you see the patterns, you can resist the damage. It's very tough - wishing you strength.

I see your posts and commiserate. There is support out there. The Domestic Abuse Helpline operates 24/7, and will listen with compassion and kindness. You can call as often as you need. Might help to have an understanding ear for now, and they can signpost to direct support in future if needed.

Heady concoction of bigotry and misogyny, the tale as old as time 🙄 Interesting that the subtlety has been completely ditched over time. Hate speech towards poor women is just fine now.

Called my masters dissertation Poor Cows or Dangerous Beasts, about how broadsheets write about WC (single) mothers. Titled a lecture from it quoting a Telegraph journo of the time who called them (me!) "morally bankrupt parasites". Nearly two decades ago and the hatred and vitriol still flow ...

Did we ever have any wanted visitors? This is awful sad, far too young. Loved this track, but first I sought out on hearing the news was What - a banger, with a great video.

Maryhill in Glasgow is drenched with them. Every street around high rise blocks where a ton of migrants are housed (including my street). It's despicable

Great episode. Re the welfare cuts/acute health crisis we're experiencing, nobody mentions austerity. Data shows by 2019, we were already dying/getting very sick as a direct result. Highly recommend Social Murder, a book by academic colleagues David Walsh& Gerry McCartney from Uni of Glasgow.
