Feel like every time this prompt comes up I gotta say it, but Fire Emblem Fates giving its dragons forms that resemble other animals (Corrin a deer, Garon is crocodilian, Lilith a koi) is part of why that has maybe the best art direction in the series.

A white and blue dragon that has a sort of deer like appearance, huge antler horns and hands clenched in knuckles to resemble hooves, pins down a blue and white clad woman while glowing water surrounds them.

I will say, of course, that I am this optimist. A version that updates the game to be seamless, like Zelda's modern incarnations or Dark Souls, would lose the moments where we walk off screen, fade to white, and come back, with Link having walked some unknown distance.

Maybe the optimist's view is that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (2026), in its painstaking detail and single-minded reproduction of the 1998 game, is an argument for limitations in a world where the biggest games must do it all – that all the technical resources in the world will not dull the magic of a game with such a careful focus. See, always nice to just have thoughts at the ready in blog form (though omg I found so many spelling errors in that last part and my commitment to the "these are actual letters" bit means I can't edit... but augh)

It’s to be expected, since a lot of what got us to this point is based on viewing games as product rather than art. The Atari crash was about a ton of consumer distrust at busted products with no standard of quality (most infamously known through E.T., but a far more pervasive issue than that oversimplification). Nintendo revitalized the market by selling the NES/Famicom as a toy. Products were often uncommon, so magazines frequently included numbers and hotlines to find the various games, and one of the most prolific magazines was Nintendo Power, which was officially published.

But if I was in the scoring buisness, the only games I would be giving 10’s out of 10 to would be Silksong and Kabuto Park, and you know that people would then lose their minds and send me death threats over Kabuto Park vs. Hades 2 getting a 4. There’s a level where the awards and reviews themselves have become as crowd-pleasing as the games. And

No, it's called Mario Kart World. It's not called Mario Kart 9. That doesn't mean the next one couldn't be Mario Kart X or something, but the title is a deliberate choice as Yabuki said in the developer interview.

I’d like to ask about the title first. Was it always the plan to call it Mario Kart World, rather than Mario Kart 9?

Yabuki: If the idea had just been to add more courses, then I think we would’ve called it Mario Kart 9.

But, that wasn't our approach this time. We wanted to take the series to the next level. So, we decided to drop the numbering this time and go with a completely new title, Mario Kart World. So, we'd already added “MARIO KART WORLD” to the concept art from the early stages of development.

A series of skeletons on a shelf, all on sale for 13.99. They have various costumes and poses. Two kissing, a chef, holding shopping bags and latte, playing tennis in a skirt, golfing, dribbling a soccer ball, relaxing in the bath with one reading and the other having a hair towel and cucumber eye mask, sitting on the toilet on a laptop, on a pink floatie. Many of these have specific and kind of offensive gendering features like long hair on the shopper to remind you it's a woman, flowers on one of the kissing ones so you know it's not gay, boy hair for the chef...
But hey, maybe that's just me and my prejudices! Maybe the iced latte cellphone one is a boy. Shopper guy, just one guy, one shopper man or woman we don't know... for sure.

Also I am obligated... If you like this, you're gonna love a little game called StarFox Zero.

To its credit, Wild Blue Skies does do some neat score chasing things. You can get commendations if you perform well, but they are split into two parts: medals and ribbons. You get the former by finding letters – WILD – scattered throughout each level, whether out in the open or hidden inside crates or enemies, and finding them is fun. Ribbons come from getting a high score, so landing charge shot combos and knowing the levels is important, but you also get score bonuses for things like finding all the letters, keeping your team alive, finishing a level at full health, and taking out a boss quickly. When you nail all of them in a single run, it feels pretty great.
