him receiving basic care and affection in return is illegal in 195 countries. but he'll get used to it you might expect ambrose to be the shy one since it's so foreign to him, but it's vittore once his walls are down. he can't handle being unconditionally loved at all. he will melt into a puddle

he still won't verbalize his feelings for a LONG time but you definitely feel it in everything he does. he uproots his entire life for him. willingly destroys himself emotionally and physically for his sake bc he both loves him and can't handle the idea of heartbreak and being left alone again

a consequence of him being so emotionally avoidant is that after his life went up in flames (literally), he had nobody. fast forward a few years. ambrose comes into town. they both hate and are intrigued by each other. vittore accidentally gets attached and goes through the stages of grief

that whole arrangement barely lasted 2 years and when it was over he pretty much just buried himself in his work. there were some relationships with no strings attached here and there bc he did desperately want to feel loved, yet refused to commit to anything serious

it was sort of a "right person, wrong time" situation. they had to keep it a secret, which put more and more strain on the relationship until it fell apart. THEN he had to get married. to a woman. one he didn't get along with. (she found out about it eventually. never spoke a word of it to anyone)

ages ago i mentioned the ex-wife and how they were pressured into it, hated each other, are chill now etc. but that wasn't his first relationship. he had his first love when he was 20-21. that breakup fucked him up SO bad. he didn't fully recover from it for years
