The state with the worst UI system in the country wants to make getting benefits even harder: www.orlandoweekly.com/news/legisla...
HB 191/SB 216: Make it harder to get unemployment benefits

This legislation would add additional eligibility requirements (or hurdles) in order to get and keep unemployment assistance from the state, also known as reemployment assistance. The proposal, for instance, would disqualify recipients if they don’t contact at least five employers per week for a job and would mandate biweekly eligibility checks, adding to the workload of staff within the Department of Commerce, which oversees the program.

Florida Republicans want to give a fetus more rights than the vessel: www.orlandoweekly.com/news/legisla...
HB 289/SB 164: Give fetuses some of the same legal rights as children

This legislation would give fetuses and embryos some of the same legal rights as human children by allowing parents to sue for damages over the wrongful death of an “unborn child.” The term “unborn child,” under the proposal, is defined as “a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.”

Florida's minimum wage is under attack: a bill to allow workers to "voluntarily" opt out is in the works www.orlandoweekly.com/news/legisla...
HB 221/SB 1412: Create a loophole allowing employers to pay some workers less than minimum wage

This legislation would allow employers to pay certain entry-level workers, including interns, apprentices, pre-apprentices and work-study program participants less than the state minimum wage for up to nine months. That’s if the worker voluntarily “opts out” of being paid at least the state minimum wage

The Florida Highway Patrol openly admitted to a lawyer that they racial profiled her client. www.tampabay.com/news/florida...?
She said her client was originally held at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection building in Dania Beach for about a week after he was stopped at a truck weigh station by Florida Highway Patrol officers on June 25. He has a valid driver’s license, Cuprys said. She still doesn’t know why he was detained that day. The Honduran man called her when he was stopped and a Florida Highway Patrol officer took the phone and told her that anyone who “appears Hispanic” needs to be sent to Customs and Border Protection to have their license verified, she said. Cuprys didn’t name her client publicly, but the Times/Herald was able to independently confirm he is a detainee at the facility.

Democratic messaging now competing against the massive propaganda machine of the entire US Government. Most folks simply won't believe official messages like this are full of lies.
Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.

The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation's economy.

“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned."

The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned.

Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

Nazi's conclusion: The constitution is unconstitutional.
But the question of how officials should respond to Mr. Damsky — who, in an interview, said that referring to him as a Nazi “would not be manifestly wrong” — is not merely academic.

Image

After Mr. Damsky posted on X that Jews must be “abolished by any means necessary,” the university suspended him, barred him from campus and stepped up police patrols around the law school.Credit...Jacob Langston for The New York TimesMr. Damsky’s paper includes arguments similar to those recently adopted by the Trump administration, including a call to “reconsider” birthright citizenship, and an assertion that “aliens remain second-class persons under the Constitution.”

It also argues that courts should challenge the constitutionality of the 14th Amendment, which ensures birthright citizenship, due process and equal protection under the law, and the 15th Amendment, which protects the right to vote for nonwhite citizens.

The Act as it exists today creates three distinct situations in which the President is authorized to “call out” regular federal armed forces on U.S. soil for law enforcement purposes:
most problematically, to put down “any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it—

    (1) so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or

    (2) opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.”

The suspension of the search for the liberal arts college’s dean also follows years of political tension between the DeSantis administration and Florida’s higher education institutions. DeSantis has implemented sweeping reforms banning diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, restricting how race and gender can be taught and giving state-appointed boards greater power over academic affairs. Critics say the changes amount to ideological censorship and are undermining academic freedom.

UF has been a focal point of those battles — particularly its liberal arts college. Since 2022, humanities professors at the college have been locked in a feud with UF’s Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education, a GOP-backed institute that critics view as part of a top-down conservative overhaul of curriculum. Tensions flared last spring, culminating in the resignation of then-liberal arts dean David Richardson in May, leaving the college under interim leadership ever since.

The four finalists in the now-suspended search for a permanent liberal arts dean had participated in recorded public interviews, where some voiced concerns about recent legislative actions and the impact on faculty morale. The CommiesOnCampus post featured selectively edited clips of those interviews and accused the candidates of pushing progressive agendas. The account, which has increasingly targeted Florida academics, describes itself as dedicated to “exposing communism in America.”

FB post by Rep. David Tyson Smith:
Congressman Alford sent 3 staffers to my office to intimidate my Legislative Assistant and told her not to give out his public number to constituents who call and are angry about Trump’s and Musk’s federal policies. They said he was getting inundated with calls and was cornered in a coffee shop by angry people. A VA employee came to my office and we sent her over as well. The staffers said the Congressman doesn’t want to talk about the VA. One of the staffers further tried to intimidate my LA by asking for a picture with her. Congressman Alford, if you have a problem with angry constituents, have the courage to address it with President Trump. Do not try to intimidate my staff. Also, feel free to pick up the phone and call me man to man. I will be following this up with a letter to your office. I am not going to be intimidated by you.

Face eaten. No regrets.
Another Trump voter described how he had served with the military in Iraq and Afghanistan, suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, and recently found fulfillment at the Veterans Affairs Department, helping others work through financial difficulties.

“I mean, I'll recover, but this, this was really a job that meant a lot to me,” said the worker, who identified himself only as Mike. “It was a way for me to give back, to help veterans that are struggling, and that was something I felt that I did avery good job at.”

He said he had “proudly” voted for Trump. “But at this point, I mean obviously, I never would have expected things to go this far. I'm still in shock,” he added. “To say whether I regret that vote, I don't want to go as far as to say that.”

Bored at your soporific union general meeting? Keep your brothers and sisters awake with a good of the union report. Here's what I presented on billionaire bosses and Trump's NLRB tonight:
NLRB Report February 2025

President Trump never campaigned on the idea of dismantling the NLRB, but just 2 weeks into his reign, he essentially has.

Contrary to the law which established the National Labor Relations Board, he has fired a board member without cause, leaving the board without a quorum and unable to adjudicate even routine matters.

This means that union-busting bosses like Amazon and Whole Foods boss Jeff Bezos can ignore union election results indefinitely simply by filing an appeal to a board that cannot make any decisions.

That just happened today. Philadelphia Whole Foods workers won their union election last week, and today Whole Foods filed an appeal with the NLRB that will essentially nullify the election results until the board has a quorum and can rule.

This seems to be a continuation of a trend since the inauguration: Billionaire boss’s priorities are getting done more often and more quickly than the president’s own priorities.

If you haven’t heard, billionaire boss Elon Musk, who nobody voted for, has been given unprecedented access to our nations treasury and secrets, including all of our Social Security numbers, and this dude has wanted to destroy the NLRB for a long time.

Last year, Musk’s SpaceX teamed with fellow billionaire boss Bezos and they’re suing to have the entire National Labor relations Board declared unconstitutional. A judge has not yet ruled, but that didn’t stop Musk from having his co-president Trump shut it down anyway.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission are also under attack.

The ultimate goal here is to have no federal oversight of bosses and no federal protections for workers while also overturning the longstanding legal structure that allows workers to join together and form unions like ours.

In just over a year, the law has led to over 60,000 thousand public sector employees across the state losing their union representation with the decertification of over 50 unions, according to an investigation by WLRN in Miami. McKenna Schueler, a reporter at Creative Loafing Tampa Bay sibling publication Orlando Weekly has followed this topic extensively and cites over 90 bargaining units (distinct groups of workers with a common interest represented by a union) that have been decertified since the law took effect. The law affects all public sector employee unions, except those for police officers, firefighters and correctional officers.

If you want an idea of what the next 4 years will be like, just look at 21st century Florida. 2004: Here's a conservative Senator fucking with our community radio over song lyrics: buff.ly/3DocV5m
In early April, Grant presented a budget amendment that cut WMNF's funding and redirected it to a proposed entrepreneurship program at USF. He said the station's liberal politics and varied musical programming did not conform to what he described as the traditional standards of public radio.

WMNF, which received state funding for the first time last year, has met federal criteria as a public radio station since 1984. Station officials said Grant, who derided certain song lyrics, was trying to censor the commercial-free station.

Yep - The dead business district is a feature, not a bug... www.nytimes.com/2024/12/15/u...
He told them about his parents, who immigrated from Mexico to Georgia as children and later were given amnesty under President Ronald Reagan. They worked in menial jobs, saved and eventually managed to buy a building in the center of downtown Rome, where they opened a restaurant and a night club. It was a popular place, especially among the city’s growing number of immigrants, but neighboring business owners kept creating new obstacles: challenging their liquor license, citing arcane building codes, filing noise complaints and eventually resorting to outright racism by accusing Delgado’s family of a far-fetched connection to a Mexican cartel. The Rome police kept showing up at the restaurant. The City Council got involved. Eventually, his parents decided to close the business and follow Delgado to Atlanta, where he’d become a prominent immigration lawyer in part so he would be able to defend his family if they suffered discrimination again.
