John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 07/02/2026Given that you’re trying to advance the field to be a more serious discipline I was curious to know if you have any thoughts. 040 4
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 07/02/2026@technologytulip.bsky.social I saw your talk “Architecture as Science” and I agree that a paradigm shift is coming. I think the paradigm will be thinking about software as a data manufacturing system with mathematical modeling of hardware performance to enforce rigor. I put my ideas in a blog post.blog-konecny.xyzData Transport PhenomenaTransport Phenomena turned Chemical Engineering into a proper engineering discipline. If we follow the same roadmap, we too, as software engineers, can turn our profession into a proper engineering di... 150 5
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 30/12/2025I wish I could make a better description of what I mean in 300 characters. 😆 We definitely both agree that we need reforms in the way software engineering is taught though. 010 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 30/12/2025I feel like we aren’t talking about data flow in the same way. To me, data flow is focusing on what series of data transformations need to take place to get your data from point A to point B. I don’t you can write a single line of code without worrying about that. 110 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 30/12/2025I think we should have three paths Software Developers: who focus on specific technologies and writing the code. Software engineers: who focus on data flow modeling using math to guide design decisions. Computer scientist: who develop better understandings of data flow theory 010 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 30/12/2025I don’t think it’s a given that stagnation in a degree’s curriculum is inherently a bad thing… if it’s working. I’d argue the focus is too much on specific technologies. To me, you live and die by understanding how data flows through your system. We should teach around how to think about data flow. 200 2
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 20/12/2025I know a lot of people in my network are struggling to find work. I decided to post my own personal experience with being unemployed for a whole three years. I hope the lessons I learned about finding a job can help you get through these difficult times.blog-konecny.xyzUnemployed for Three YearsBeing unemployed for three years was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, but I learned how to be a happier and healthier person because of it. 000 0
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 20/12/2025As a manager, I have a hard time seeing how AI can replace my direct reports. They help me come up with way better solutions than what I produce with AI. Maybe I don’t know how to use AI. 😆 000 0
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 26/09/2025I’m a software developer too so I get it. It’s hard enough to get anyone to care about something you’ve done. I’m sure it’s cool to see so many people enjoying your game! I wish you the best of luck! 110 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 25/09/2025I’m a big fan of Caesar 3 and City Skylines. Is there anything you feel like Pompeii does better than those two? 110 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 16/08/2025Just made a blog post about how we can start developing new equations to predict the performance of software. I’m hoping to do a conference talk about this. I’m curious to know if anyone has any suggestions of where I should try to speak at! blog-konecny.xyz/blog/2025/da...blog-konecny.xyzData Transport PhenomenaTransport Phenomena turned Chemical Engineering into a proper engineering discipline. John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 11/08/2025If chemical engineering can predict the way trillions of molecules will bounce off each other using equations are reasonably accurate. I’m confident we can do the same for software. How long that take? I hope it’s in my lifetime. 😆 010 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 11/08/2025It took centuries of building off of scientific research to come up with a comprehensive set of equations that they could confidently use to guide their design decisions. The equations aren’t perfect, but they’re good enough to bet millions of dollars with. 100 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 11/08/2025To give you an idea of how this would look in software, instead of using big O notation, imagine you actually calculated the estimated runtime performance in seconds of your algorithm on specific hardware. It may sound impossible, but the same was true for chemical engs with their problems. 100 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 11/08/2025Those are fundamental math classes which enable you to understand the equations in you engineering classes. I majored in chemical eng and every ChemE class was an applied math class. As far as I’m aware the same is true for other engineering majors. 100 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 10/08/2025I think we really need mathematics to help guide design decisions if we want to be proper engineers. People do some rough estimates, but it’s not to the same level as a traditional engineering field. I think it’s very doable, but without math I think we severely hamper our potential as an industry. 110 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 10/08/2025I feel like I’ve seen talks by Mary and I seem to remember that she doesn’t believe we are a true engineering discipline… yet, but we are working towards it. Is that essentially the conclusion of the book? 100 1
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 05/07/2025Point taken—but they might be piecing together a lot of legacy components. Again, I’m not saying that’s a good excuse, but it can take a lot of effort to push back against creating a bad user experience, especially when refactoring is involved. Not that I’m speaking from experience… 😆 000 0
John Konecny @blog-konecny.xyz · 05/07/2025I agree with how silly that workflow is, but do you really it’s because they didn’t think about the user experience? My guess would be that it was easier to do it that way and it wasn’t worth improving the experience, at least in their assessment. 100 1
