I get that with music. the shins’ album oh, inverted world is very associated with reading the Duke of death and his maid when i lived at my aunt’s in high school. REM is a band i cyclically return to listening to but also reminds me of a rather unpleasant romantic tryst

The Power Broker by Robert Cari is an oft-cited rather monumental biography of Robert Moses, who terrible man that he was, is one of the main architects of the modern American city [derogatory]. I also have a book called Building the Revolution, which is about Soviet art and architecture

Bitterly divided: the south’s inner civil war is a collection of articles, letters, and other material about southern resistance to secession. It’s a very good look at what is usually described as a hegemonic north v south conflict.

There’s a book called Lesbian Nuns: Breaking the Silence that I think is very interesting. It’s a bunch of interviews and personal histories of various American nuns/ex nuns who were lesbians in the 50s-80s. I also like The Box by Marc levinson, which is about how containers took over world shipping

i suppose polybius’ sin in that case is not having pretty cabinet art to make you think you’re doing more than what you are. anyways, these are all cheap shots at a relatively flimsy urban legend

one of the highest grossing games that year was atari’s asteroids, which is extremely abstract. you are asked to pretend a triangle is a cool spaceship shooting asteroids. the game tempest is very geometric, bearing little relation to anything you could imagine in reality.

the mythical arcade cabinet polybius was said to have came out in 1981, having “abstract” and “geometric” gameplay. did anyone stop to think that games in 1981 just kind of looked like that? they had barely just invented computer graphics that actually looked like stuff.

people find fishing irl to be a relaxing, even meditative activity. I would guess they extend that same impression to video game fishing, even if it does not live up to it. That’s why it’s seen as one of the marks of a ‘cozy-core’ game

would you so easily leave the popcorn woman out of your heart? throw her away like unpopped popcorn at the bottom of the popcorn bucket?
