Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/10/2026My anecdote is not nearly as funny as these ones, but one of my friends was convinced by an Irsh streamer that leprechaun mythology is not actually from Ireland and never had any presence there. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Is that where the “don’t post about sports,” thing cane from? 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Are there any left-wing separatists anymore or is that completely dead? 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/07/2026That’s probably the strongest argument for his influence. But it’s such a small number of artists + you’d have to separate out him being strongly associated with them v.s. him actually impacting their careers/how they’re perceived. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Even though his taste is much more influential than his criticism, I think his taste is not that influential (it’s hard to measure) and he was just in the right place at the right time. He is not going to shape the way people view this era of music historically like the Rolling Stone did in the 70s. 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Super late response - It ties in with his connection to internet culture. I think he made 4chan /mu/ staples (and the stuff they championed) a bit more mainstream + there are specific niche artists (like Lingua Ignota) that his reviews drew a larger audience to. 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 23/06/2026Fantano’s taste is far more influential than his actual criticism. He is almost certainly the most famous music critic, but he got lucky with his timing + that has a lot to so with the music and internet culture he is associated with. 140
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Genuinely would rather watch someone sincerely hating on something I love than any of this. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026What’s a good place to jump in on AEW right now? 210
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Obviously “Christian as an academic subject” is not really the perspective most devout Christians would take. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026They’re far from being the first henotheistic Christians, I think they can still qualify as Christians still. 100
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Aren’t they arguably non-monotheistic? I think that’s the thing that most distances them from mainstream Christianity. 150
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026And science (+ things that appear to be science) has been intertwined with religious belief basically from its inception. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/06/2026The idea that modern (particularly American and European) society has less belief in the fantastic, supernatural, etc. falls apart when you see look at what the supposedly non-religious actually believe! 100
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 22/05/2026Idk why Batman v. Superman was such a bomb (except that it looked and was terrible), but there was a pretty big gap between the Bale Batman and the Pattinson Batman, which are the actual mainline Batman movies. 140
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 22/05/2026D.C. arguably does this, or at least they’re closer to it than Marvel, Star Wars, etc. 120
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 08/05/2026All my friends love this show and I genuinely think it’s terrible. 040

Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 27/04/2026A lot of science educators are really bad at doing that. History educators are a bit better, but you’d be shocked at how many podcasts, videos, etc. are regurgitating one book in their own words without any citation, as if the info came directly from their head. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 21/04/2026What are some other books you’d recommend on the subject? 100
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 16/04/2026Originally , Drake was supposed to perform. Idk if they dropped him. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 30/03/2026The assumption that tech will continue to advance forever should not be taken for granted. For all we know, we’re close to the ceiling of advancement in many areas. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 29/03/2026Twin Peaks opened the way, imo, for “Prestige” TV Dramas to incorporate soap-opera elements. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 23/03/2026I think it would have been much better if it had zoomed in even closer on Josephine and Napoleon’s relationship. Almost everything else seemed superfluous at best, including the quite lame battles. 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 11/03/2026I really don’t like her going nuts, even if that’s what the story is obviously leading to. I would prefer if it were a horrible but rational strategic decision that ends up with her not on the throne anyways because of the blowback. 020
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 04/03/202680s movie nostalgia is so trash, so many 80s classics are mid. Especially comedies. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 01/03/2026One thing I will say about the movies is that (imo) the significant changes made to Frodo are lateral moves and not straight downgrades. I see the value in both movie and book Frodo, but definitely agree on Merry and Pippin. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 01/03/2026I haven’t cared about superheroes (save the Hulk and maybe Batman) for years. But I did when Iron Man 3 came out, and loved it at the time. It feels like a much more natural endpoint for the character than Avengers: Endgame, imho. Endgame felt completely divorced from the solo Iron Man movies. 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 28/02/2026“Free for whom” is an extremely important question and you shouldn’t make a distinction between non-Americans and Americans when you ask it. 050
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 28/02/2026It isn’t more free because it’s government is morally superior. There are many examples of the US government committing actually genocide worthy of being treated just like you suggest treating Russia or China. 140
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 28/02/2026And until liberal interventionists explicitly call for outside military intervention into the US, I’m not convinced their perspective isn’t a massive double standard. 110
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 28/02/2026Nuclear weapons are an extremely effective deterrent. I’m sure these people are out there, but very people suggest literally going to war with Israel. 100
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 28/02/2026Risking nuclear war is a very bad idea. + By this standard, there are nations who would be 110% justified in taking military action against the US, but liberal interventionists love double standards and the state of exception as much as conservatives. 180
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 25/02/2026I used to think I had to rush to watch things before they left the Criterion Channel, but the thing is, there is so much to watch that even if didn’t watch any of that, I’d still find something great. I don’t want to artificially limit myself. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 07/02/2026Forcing the GoT writers to watch the Lion in Winter at gunpoint. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 26/01/2026But I would also say I think his explanation for a lot of his behavior is 100% plausible (the way he’s acted is far beyond just being a bad person, he clearly had something very serious going on mentally). People underestimate how much a person can dramatically change as a result of mental crises. 020
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 26/01/2026Kanye has serious sexual assault allegations, so him just acknowledging the anti-semitism doesn’t come close to covering everything. I personally feel like even if this apology is sincere, it’s far too late for him to get some sort of public redemption. 130
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 17/01/2026I had a way more cynical reading of the ending (I basically thought Dave was turned into a Monolith type being - a machine). But I like your reading of it, too! 000

Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 12/01/2026It’s not ableist to fund sports for kids wanting to play. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Not to mention all the all problems with her singling out that space as catering to heterosexuals. 000
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Kinda contradictory of them on a basic level to call something a heterosexual bar and then complain about a man being there, tbh. 100
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 07/01/2026Not exactly the same thing, but certain board game chain smells like complete shit (at least where I live) and it 100% keeps people out. 010
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 07/01/2026He is legitimately insane. He constantly posts about breaking up nations, especially ones he perceives as pro-Russia. He wants China and India to be both be broken up into several nations, for example. 050
Harper @blighttowndemsoc.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Herbert was a complete crank politically. He was definitely right-wing, but was also extremely skeptical of political hierarchy, and even the concepts of leadership and merit. In his mind, someone being a good, charismatic leader was basically a bad thing. 110
