.. and instead took on the job of standing watching passers-by in case anyone looked like they were going to start taking pictures. Probably a good thing that I didn't have to yell at anyone. Maybe my glowering was effective. (He was fine in the end. Was up and gone before the paramedics arrived.)

Walked into my favoured coffee shop this morning and a bloke who was just getting up to go suddenly went down like a sack of potatos and had a full-on grand mal seizure. That was a surprise. Once it was clear there were more qualified people than me taking charge I stepped back to give them space

This is the dodgiest and most-desperate thing I’ve seen in the bubble so far. Amazon selling their chips to a group of investors and leasing them back - an off balance sheet arrangement done in plain sight. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. And they’ll probably buy more!
Amazon is seeking to offload about $8bn of advanced Nvidia chips to external investors through a new vehicle aimed at strengthening its balance sheet, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Seattle-based cloud giant has held talks with investors in recent weeks to gauge interest in the deal, which would allow the company to spin off thousands of Grace Blackwell chips it is deploying in data centres across the US into a special-purpose vehicle.
Amazon will then lease the advanced AI chips back from the SPV, which would tap outside investors through debt issuance. By unloading the expensive semiconductors to investors, the company could adopt a more asset-light approach to its balance sheet.

look I know stereotypes are wrong but I watched a video by a Dutch guy driving his VW Up from Amsterdam to Yakutsk and in the first five minutes he's already complained about the price of petrol in Germany and said that he knows the road as he used to do the run in a big truck full of flowers.

Yeah. I mean once it's shorn of all the waffle and football accounting TLAs it's remarkably easy to understand.

Wondering how it is that the clearest and most concise summary of the Man City thing is in the Financial Times. Maybe it's the only newspaper which doesn't assume that all its readers understand football..

I have always been opposed to judicial killing in any form whatsoever but even I think that if you really *must* do it then you should at least do it competently. Even as an abolitionist I have respect for people like Albert Pierrepoint who knew the sentence was only death, not medieval torture.

Mike Knell @blat.at · 01/10/2026
The death penalty is one of the weirdest corners of American exceptionalism. Decades of confidently declaring that they know better than anyone else how to judicially kill people and they still manage to fuck up this seemingly simple task. They even fucked up the executions at Nuremberg.

I have done that job (as an amateur, never professionally) and there absolutely are orchestral pieces for which the percussion score involves counting a couple of hundred bars followed by a single very loud cymbal crash - and not on beat 1 but something like beat 2.5, just to catch you out.

I'm sure wrists will be slapped, but they will be low level junior wrists and the people at the top and their Emirati owners will issue statements about how shocked they were to discover this unauthorised fraud was going on and promising their full cooperation if the police choose to take action.

There has to be some criminal behaviour in there as well, surely? Not that anyone at the top of this mountain of corruption is ever going to be held properly accountable..

now I'm wondering if the farmer who called the cops at Fairford had a pretty good idea that they were diesel thieves but realised that it might not do any harm if they didn't mention that and let the cops think they were dealing with terrorists. Quite a smart move, really.
140
Mike Knell @blat.at · 29/09/2026
This is what happens when you go straight to "omg terrorism!" police response rather than maybe actually involving the local plod who would know the local area and also know that a couple of vans in a farmer's lane in the small hours might well be interested in stealing *from the farm*.

That image that's doing the rounds of Steve Jobs going "Who wants a STYLUS?" at the iPhone launch as a comment on the iPhone Duo being compatible with the Apple Pencil was a huge deal at the time because all the early smartphones I'd had *required* one. It wasn't an optional extra.

I love the tiny diggers because they never have normal-sized drivers, they always have to be driven by large men so they look like clown cars or something.

It's worth listening to Sparrow's lament over the collapse of the proposed West Indian Federation (under which all the British colonies would have become independent as a single federated entity) in 1962. Calypso wasn't just for partying, it also got serious: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoZy...

I had a BBC colleague in the early 90s whose girlfriend was a researcher on Watchdog (although let's be honest, he was an engineer so it's possible she didn't actually exist). Any problems she had getting a refund were quickly solved by a phone call "from the Watchdog office". They *were* the mob.

Amazing how accidents only ever happen because it's the pedestrians who are in the wrong place, not because drivers come around the corner way too fast.

Colonoscopy done. Easy as pie in the end - just a nice nap. And peace of mind for the next 5 years. And a picture of my appendix to take home. Seriously nothing to worry about. And chaps, compared to what women go through for half their lives with cervical smears and so on it's *nothing*.

You can tell you're in the 18th district when you're waiting for the bus and the big FPÖ poster on the shelter is being vigorously vandalised by a respectable looking middle aged gentleman.

Very cool indeed especially if he was putting up the slides himself and had to try and sort out the mess while talking. I guess what he thought would be the RT promo slide turned out to be the apology caption. Then the NC1 director was distracted by the goings on and got Gloria's cue a little wrong.

Watching the 1980 BBC Shakespeare production of The Tempest and amused that it features David Dixon (who played Ford in the BBCtv adaptation of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as an extremely fey Ariel, clad only in a loincloth and a lot of glittery bronzer.
David Dixon as Ariel, sat on the ground cross-legged. He's completely the same light bronze colour from head to foot.
