Who would have guessed that in 2025 perhaps the biggest threat to eu security would be the USA! Ukraine has blocked the Russian threat, and China is not threatening militarily. Only USA provides military threat (not alliance!) to EU nations sovereign territory.

Not surprising as the the country risk of US is enormously higher than it was a few months ago. Even release of source code to tier 1 partners or even to all users to reduce fear of the kill switch does not remove Trump's Usa-related country risk.

For me, Avionist is the best description. I disagree most with Schranzhofer. He has his points, but they don't imply a complete grounding of the machine. They do affect availability and especially survivability, but they do not prevent use in a low-threat scenario.

So many European countries say there is no switch. Lockheed is more cautious in its statements, but stresses the autonomous capability of the aircraft. Although what else would you expect?

The Avionist compares F-35 to a smart phone that wont stop working but runs into troubles without new updates.

Germanys Schranzhofer puts it it bit different: ”The job is handled much more simply through the flight mission planning system. Then the fighter immediately stays on the ground, says Schranzhofer in the Bild article.”

LM also refers to a statement by the Belgian armed forces commander that "we have no indication that the plane could be remotely controlled".
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 11/03/2025
Switzerlands ministry DDPS corrected its statement. Now it sais that plane can’t be remotely controlled and they can use plane and missiles for its defence without promision from US. By DDPS they can do it independently when ever they want.

Finnish mod say that there is no single kill switch that prevents the use of the jet. However updates and maintenance will make vital dependance.

These things just can’t be run in 4year periods. I further argue that no one (maybe except of Germany) should not go for F-35 as a new user at the moment, and europe should invest much more in own 6gen jets and develop indigenous systems apart from US.
000
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
So in the end, who knows which systems can be circumvented and which are the ultimate paralyze to the use of the jet or the jet itself. I take it clear that loss of US support is fatal of operating F-35.At least in long term. I also argue that who has them can’t rapidly replace them, nor should they

Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
Finally the wild card. 10years ago, who would’ve guessed seeing HARM fired from Migs? Or 50years ago that Iran is still flying F-14? Russia is still flying western jetliners too etc.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
So building the switch would have been huge economical, political and military risk. The gamble that can be won other ways without risking it all. Keep in mind the fact that F-35 is not open for everyone to buy and buyers are and will be commited to partnership anyway, already being allies.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
Having given few thoughts, there propably is some systems, or even whole jet that will require regular connection to ALIS/ODIN to work. But I don’t consider it as a switch anymore than some computer worm planted with the update.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
If you consider removal of OEM support as the kill switch, then there definetly is one. For sure. Like Justin Bronk wisely said ”there definetly is dependance”, well there is, and it is major one in the case of F-35.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
After all, things like ALIS/ODIN and its requirement of connectivity is publicly known fact and so is data sharing and analyzing. Things that has also been disgussed while HX program was ongoing.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
In the digital (not to mention AI) era OEM support is the key in just about anything (I bet Ford can cripple my Mach E in anytime). It didn’t even come in my mind that someone could think operating worlds most advanced jet without OEM support for extended periods of time is possible.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
If there is the switch, how would’ve those partners reacted knowledge of if it leaks? Back off from funding and help of design and build? Canceling the program would’ve then been real possibility. Trillion dollars would’ve been wasted.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
Lets say China hacks it for example. They simply turn of majority of US airforce, Navy and Marine jets? In the other hand, everyone operating the plane is already tied into the US. In smaller scale it is so with even with older planes like F-16, F-15 and F-18. Irans F-14 being anomaly.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
However, I can be wrong, but I don’t believe there is one. Simple question is why would they have build one? Without US support jet can’t be used anyway, it’s not open just for any country to buy and what if its hacked?
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
US ability to get already known to be expencive program to the goal was debendant for these parters to help and partly fund the program. Keeping source code all by itself, was major issue back in the days. It also makes kill switch or development of the switch possible.
100
Vetus Flatus @blaster79.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
F-35 or JSF program was too big for US to handle by itself to begin with. So there were several close allies as tier1 partners. Partnerships eventually growing to levels 2 and 3.
