He kills a bunch of people to rise in the ranks, by the time he fights Alice he says how senseless the killing is as he grew to respect her and a few others, i interpreted as that. The other character Shinobu genuinely cares about him but he acts like an ass to her or pushes her away, she's a better character than sylvia though.
