I'm afraid we're going to have to touch the stove on this one. There's just too much damn money being spent to maintain the power of money.

These are the nine most expensive races for California Legislature
Groups funded by Meta, Google, and cryptocurrency billionaires have spent millions trying to sway voters, especially in races with two Democrats on the ballot

Californian here- top 2 primaries are terrible. In a solid blue state, this system ensures that the most conservative Democrat wins each election.

IOW, I don't think that a recorded phone call of Trump saying "we just need to find 11,000 friendly moderators", or something equivalently explicit, is a *necessary* condition for starting an investigation.

If Meta's moderation is so creaky that this is just going to happen all the time to accounts that should be cross-checked, that's in the public interest to know. If Meta operates on Cosa Nostra rules and everyone knows what needs to be done without being told, that's in the public interest to know.

and the underlying infrastructure can be investigated, no?

Blake C. Stacey @blakestacey.myatproto.social · 18/10/2026
For analogy: MSNow's choice of which anchors to put on the air is obviously protected speech. But what if there were a scandal about minorities getting unjustifiably dropped from rotation, or women getting paid less for equal work? What goes on the air is 1A-protected, but surely the process

Blake C. Stacey @blakestacey.myatproto.social · 18/10/2026
There's a genuine investigation to be done regarding Meta's behavior, whereas there isn't with MSNow. There could be a substantive hearing about the difficulty of content moderation at scale. It'd be fact-finding in the people's interest, even though the decision that prompted it is 1A-protected.

Blake C. Stacey @blakestacey.myatproto.social · 18/10/2026
I *do* think these can be distinguished. Hauling MSNow execs before a subcommittee would be a stunt to get them to waste time and money in retaliation for expressing opinions. Getting Zuck to testify about how an ostensibly apolitical moderation infrastructure operates? Ehh...

It seems like this shouldn't have been a thing whose existence could have been "leaked". That the Oversight Board had to recommend increased transparency after the fact... I mean, human review for some slice of accounts is a reasonable policy. Why not just announce that policy upon implementation?

Early voting starts today in Massachusetts! Do you have a plan to vote?
✅VOTE YES ON 1 to expand the public records law to cover the Governor and the Legislature. We’re the only state in the country that doesn’t do that already. Let the sunlight in.

✅VOTE YES ON 2 to enable public defenders to collectively bargain. Every worker deserves to have a union, and public defenders, who are often overworked and underpaid, should be no exception.

❌VOTE NO ON 3 to prevent private equity billionaires from rigging our election system in their favor. Top-two primaries empower corporate PACs and self-funders, disadvantage grassroots candidates, and turn MAGA voters into election kingmakers.

✅VOTE YES ON 4 to enable voters to register to vote or update their registration on Election Day. No eligible voter should be turned away due to a clerical error, and this reform is one of the most proven ways to increase voter turnout.

❌VOTE NO ON 5 to protect our state’s ability to invest in health care, transportation, and public education. The rich would get millions in tax rebates, while the rest of us suffer from underfunded public services.

⚪VOTE how you want on 6. Question 6 fell shy of our endorsement threshold: our members valued land and water conservation, but were worried about the dedication of existing funds as opposed to new ones.

✅VOTE YES on 7 to enable more starter homes across the Commonwealth. We have a housing crisis, and large lot size requirements mean fewer homes are able to be built.

❌VOTE NO on 8 to protect our state’s cannabis laws. We said NO to the war on drugs back in 2016, and we shouldn’t turn back time and destroy local economies.

✅VOTE YES ON 9 to protect our state’s landmark gun safety law, which cracked down on ghost guns, banned machine gun conversion devices, and strengthened gun violence data collection.

We could actually really use some more support - it's been really slow lately and I'm getting a bit nervous. May try to throw together a more organized campaign in the next week or two, but for now I'd love it if you'd join or share.

Mollenkott said that Elliot, who had faced death quietly more than once in the jungles of Ecuador, “‘fell down on her knees … and said, ‘You could destroy me, Virginia.’

As Mollenkott recounted it, Elliot came up behind her after the keynote, put her arms around her, and asked to talk privately, saying, “I want to straighten you out.” But whatever Elliot intended to say apparently went unspoken. As soon as they were alone in Elliot’s hotel room,

There have been advances, but nothing that takes it beyond "interesting physics experiment". Nothing in principle seems to rule out the possibility of building a big set of error-corrected qubits. It's "just" an engineering problem (like the Apollo program...).

A mass murderer who defended IQ testing on pretty much explicitly eugenicist grounds (jumping right from "IQ testing" to asserting "Leftists are antagonistic to genetic explanations of human abilities"). You do not, actually, have to hand it to the Unabomber

A mass murderer who declared "One of the most widespread manifestations of the craziness of our world is leftism" and delivered what today would be a Fox News rant about "woke" ("Political correctness has its stronghold among university professors").

Meanwhile, up here in MA, the bill passed by the state house of reps is so bad that I don't think even this 11th-Circuit ruling could save it (the ban would apply to sites whether or not they have "addictive" features).

Mexico joined the kids online protection regulation wave in the sloppiest way possible. An executive order (with no legal basis). Broad age verification mandate. Broad definition of platforms covered. Broad categories of speech with access restrictions and even removal for everyone. And more!

I mean, fuck TikTok, fuck Meta, fuck X, but don't think that Florida lawmakers and Trump-appointed Federalist Society judges can accurately diagnose the problems with them.

The definition in the law is not equivalent to "doomscroll sites". It may have been written with TikTok and Instagram in mind, but it sweeps far more broadly, because the people who wrote it are Florida legislators. Here is a site with an algorithmic, personalized feed of Wikipedia xikipedia.org
