Packing up the house for a move, best part is finding old things that remind you good times past. I used to work in the newspaper industry in a technical capacity. The attached picture is from a client onsite at "West Hawaii Today" #NASA #Astronomy #Hawaii #volcano
A man standing on the dark top of an ancient volcano with black soil and patches of white snow, high above a thick covering of clouds that stretches to the horizon.

The man smiles toward the camera with one hand resting on his hip, young, with short dark hair, and dressed all in light-colored clothing. a Kinko's sweatshirt with blue lettering, very faded jeans, and white sneakers.

The sky behind him fades from soft blue overhead to warm pinkish near the horizon, lit by the setting sun.

He stands on what seems to be the top of world on a high ridge with 4 huge astronomical telescopes on the next hill top behind him.

Spread along the ridgeline behind him are four telescopes of the Maunakea Observatories in Hawaii. From left to right, the tall rectangular Subaru Telescope, the twin rounded white domes of the Keck I and II telescopes, and the smaller NASA Infrared Telescope Facility off to the right.

The faded colors and soft focus give it the look of an older film photograph, which it is.

My friend helped me install one of the original #ring #doorbell This model is circa early 1800s but was pretty advanced for the time. It uses no electricity and an audible slice of the acoustic spectrum to connect to all the buildings on the farm. It […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]
A person on a ladder standing on the covered porch of an 1850's farmhouse, reaching up to hang a cast bronze bell on the white-painted wooden post that frames the porch opening.

This bell, likely cast between 1750 and 1850, has served as the farmhouse's "doorbell."

One hand grips the bell by its hanging bracket at the top, lifting it into position, while the other is pressed flat against the post for balance. They're wearing a dark T-shirt and a faded tan ball cap, with light reddish-blonde hair visible beneath it. Backlit by the bright daylight beyond, much of the figure reads in silhouette.

The bell itself has the classic profile of an old cast bronze bell with a rounded shoulder flaring out to a wide mouth, a clapper is hanging visibly below the rim. Its dark patina is exactly what you'd expect from bronze that's seen a century or two.

Beyond the porch, the scene is unmistakably rural. The dominant feature is a large red barn from the same time period, with a red-painted gable end and a white painted arch on the doors, topped with a long galvanized metal roof. Mature evergreens and leafy green trees fill much of the background, and a utility pole with lines runs along the right side.

In the foreground of the barn, a dark blue 2005 Volvo V70 station wagon is parked on the grass beside a ramp to the main barn doors. The grass is bright and summery, and patches of blue sky with soft clouds show through the trees clearly a warm, sunny day in early Michigan summer.

Found the US #weather app I have been looking for, with heavy emphasis on the more technical, layers, models, raw radar from #NWS. This is the breadth of raw data I have been looking for. Further, if you watch the youtube channel the developer of the app runs […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]
WeatherWise PLUS screenshot shows base radar reflectivity from the KDTX (Detroit) site over southeast Michigan, with a line of intense storms running diagonally through the Ann Arbor–Ypsilanti–Adrian area.

The types of weather information and indicators shown are:

The top navigation bar has the WeatherWise PLUS logo, a search icon, and tabs for Home, Radar (active, blue), Composite, Satellite, Models, and Outlooks, zoom controls on the right edge, and a green "KDTX" pill labeling the radar site.

Lightning strike data, shown as small bolt icons clustered near the strongest cells.

Storm-track or measurement overlays, the thin white and cyan lines with endpoint markers and estimated future location estimates in 10 minute intervals.

A scan timestamp and "Live" status ("Scan: 11:44:28 Live") with the active product label "KDTX • Reflectivity."

An active-alerts count, the orange "279" badge top-right.

Watches, warnings and other alert area boxes are overlayed.

An open product-selector panel in the lower-left showing a grid of selectable radar data products, each with a thumbnail icon: Reflectivity, Reflectivity X (Pro), Max Reflectivity (Pro), Velocity, Storm Relative Velocity, Normalized Rotation, Correlation Coefficient, Min Correlation Coefficient (Pro), Differential Reflectivity, Spectrum Width, Precipitation Type, Specific Diff. Phase, Hydrometeor Classification, Enhanced Echo Tops, and Vertical Integrated Liquid, with a scrollbar indicating more below.
