The door whooshed open into a lavish hallway with a low, intricately carved bench on the left, beneath a high-tech, shimmering mirror, and a floating step on the right. "I can't believe that worked." I activated the gloves. "The wards were mostly unreadable, but I sensed Emma's presence in them."

There were four photos. Two of his bedrooms. At Emma’s, with his first Speed Hoop Relay trophy circled. And at the farm, a circle around his Irxin Dash holo pennant—his favourite closer—signed. The one he’d saved up for, that we’d spent hours in line for on a beast of a day. Dash had won my respect for taking his time and listening to Jesper ramble with a genuine smile, as if we’d been his first visitors of the day, not the two-hundredths.

Those same items, held by an unfamiliar hand. Rough hands with wide knuckles, but perfectly manicured nails—short and painted midnight blue.
