Of course he doesn't tell those people that he knows the schedule of the road repair construction crews and rings doorbells in the nearest neignorhoods a week before they're scheduled to start. (2)

A local politician near where I live goes around ringing people's doorbells and asking them if a nearby road quality issue bothers them. When they invariably say yes, he says ok then I'll see to it that we fix it, you've got my word. (1)

Ik ben opgelucht dat ik niet de enige nerd ben die zijn familie hiervoor meesleept naar het noorden van Spanje. Wij gaan ons ergens tussen Gijón en Oviedo een berg zoeken met een schone noordwestflank

When we were in DC last fall, we requested a physical map of the area when we were at the car rental agency, and they looked at us like we were crazy. Eventually they found an old 40x30cm map from 2018, literally caked with dust. They said they were glad to be rid of it

9:30PM ET tonight. Trump calls Infantino to halt review of 1-0 scored by Balogun from offsides position. "Inevitable USMNT triumph should not be hindered by troublesome VAR. Won't someone rid me of these guys? UNFAIR. THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER"

What is the difference in the Senate between needing 50+ out of 100 votes or 75+ out of 150, if every state has exactly 1 part in 50 of all available votes?

In and of itself, I think that a bicameral coequal system with representatives of the people and of the states is actually a great way to do parliamentary democracy in a federal republic.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I'd thought it through, but the only thing it really skews is the electoral college. And that could be fixed by enlarging the House to fit better with demographics (and of course a ban on gerrymandering)

It also begs the question of whether there should always and forever be 435 districts. Even further, in my foreigner's view, two senators per state also seems clumsier than 3, if their terms are always 3 election cycles long.

I have heard people say that the French R is "obviously" different from the Belgian French R, and that the one from Brussels is (usually) somewhere in between. No idea if it's true because I can't hear it, even though I myself speak Dutch with what we call a "French" R. Language, man 🤷‍♂️

Stavros Kelepouris is journalist.

Many of my (Dutch speaking) compatriots think that English lyrics just sound better and are way deeper than Dutch songs, which according to them often sound stilted, basic, and/or awkward. So maybe it's a second language thing?

One of the worst things about English spelling is that it makes it impossible for English speakers to properly parse words that are written very close to phonetical (in the IPA) - which is usually very close to their Classical Latin pronunciation, too

@nytimes.com with the snarkiest take I've read from them in a while (on the WaPo layoffs) "The cuts are a sign that Jeff Bezos, who became one of the world’s richest people by selling things on the internet, has not yet figured out how to build and maintain a profitable publication on the internet."

This was a plot point in an old spy novel I once read. An American spy infiltrates a Russian "spy school" where everyone only speaks English, and *spoiler* is eventually found out because his English is too free-flowing and idiomatic, especially about sexual slang if I recall correctly

I am very intrigued by the kinds of mistakes you make when writing French. The fun thing is that I think I recognize the reasons why you, as an English speaker, make them like you do. My own first language is Dutch, and I feel like I write totally different kinds of errors
