There is definitely something to it, I really like being able to use my car maybe once a week and still be able to basically do everything I need to. So easy to pop out and grab a bite to eat or little thing I need without it being a whole ordeal.

They've outright stated that they want people to have to take out a subscription for intelligence, it's pretty clear the optimal result for them is that people become dependent on it (which, I would hazard a guess, is the only way the current spend becomes economically viable).

Typically bonds have been a very safe investment (hence why you are generally told to shift retirement funds from stocks to bonds as you get older, because it's essentially guaranteed, but lower-yield return), because the US is very stable as opposed to bonds for more distressed economies.
100
Chastity Blackwell @blackisis.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
So, obviously, if you think there's less of a chance someone will actually pay you back, the more of a return you're going to expect to get if you give them money now. Interest rates going up for US bonds means people are less sure about how stable an investment that is.
121
Chastity Blackwell @blackisis.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It's a little more complicated than that but in this case, it's basically how the US government pays for things by "borrowing" money -- you buy a bond so they get money now, and then they pay you back later with interest. The higher the interest rate, the more expensive it is for them to borrow.
120
Chastity Blackwell @blackisis.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
A bond is basically a promise -- I sell you 1000 dollar bond with the agreement that in 5 years (or whatever), I will pay you back 1100 dollars or whatever. This is how deficits are funded at the government level or corporations can issue bonds in the same way to fund capital improvements etc.

I'm sorry, if you put BSG that high after the implosion of its last two seasons and just completely leave off The Expanse, which had a *much* higher level of quality (and with six short seasons about as many episodes as BSG had good ones in five, 20+ ep ones), that's just insulting.

Yeah -- my kitchen isn't tiny (smaller than in an actual house sure), but the way it's organized is just bad. I would really like to renovate it, but uh...money, and also it's about eighth on the list of things that need to be fixed.

Chastity Blackwell @blackisis.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I feel like the kitchen is always where small apartments really get screwed. Even moving into my condo the kitchen does not feel particularly well designed. One of the things about my dad's place and my brother's place that makes me most jealous is their spacious kitchens.

I agree, but MSFT is an *outsized* player. They and Sony have a huge swath of the industry under their umbrella. I don't think its out of line for people who love gaming as a hobby to be upset when MSFT is both killing studios right and left and also driving the price of hardware up with AI stuff.

It feels very much like the whole private equity cycle of buying a profitable, but not WILDLY profitable business, draining the lifeblood out of it, and then scrapping it for parts.

...see this when Sharma is saying she thinks Xbox should have a billion users, which is just *wild* -- games don't work like that, and they also have the movie problem. For every GTA that sells a zillion copies you have a hundred games that do okay (or poorly). They knew that going in.

It isn't just that it's games, It's that Microsoft bought up so much of the industry that shutting down all these studios is an existential threat to gaming period. Their complaint seems to be that they aren't profitable *enough* when games were never going to make a 50% return. You can...
100
Chastity Blackwell @blackisis.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
...that coin is that supporting these studios is basically pocket change for the company, and after blowing 100B on buying every studio they could get their hands on they're now just writing it all off 5 years later, for an industry which was already teetering on the brink of collapse.

I'm not sure "the 3% margin of Xbox is a tiny sliver of MSFT's massive profits" is really going to change people's minds that it's shitty that MSFT basically bought up the entire games industry and is now systematically running it into the ground. I know what you're saying, but the other side of...

For the federal government, half the time they end up paying as much or more because they're paying for contractors which require overhead to be paid on top of whatever salaries are involved! I never understood this when I was in civic tech. Just get people who are invested in your success directly!

Is that at all worthwhile to tell me this thing is backed by a real person with a track record if that real person is just a troll who spams everything all the time? I'm not sure I understand the utility of a verification with no way to link that to a reputation. Or is this purely an anti-bot thing?

This is a powerful story from a trans Texan (who's also quite a talented independent journalist). I've been arguing that trans people have the right to be upset with Talarico, and I think we do. This is the case for vote for him anyway, eloquently made, and by someone with the standing to make it.

This, I think, is going to be the place where the rubber meets the road. Are there going to be enough people willing to pay the "real" price to sustain the wild levels of investment. At the very least, it will hopefully put an end to demands from on high to use LLMs for literally everything.
