Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 11hAnd speak of the Devil! Just as we return home from Sybil Leek’s 1950s’ village home, this arrives from the US! A 1971 who’s who of famous American witches (and Manson) with Sybil heading the front cover. A possible indicator to public attitudes to sorcery before The Exorcist landed. 011

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 14hReturned to Burley while the weather’s still okay. Burley Church has a lovely old graveyard. Wonder if any of the four New Forest covens ever made any mischief here? 100

The more I read about modern withcraft, the more links and influences appear to be more strongly intertwined with horror fiction and movies, than with history. Also, love #NewEnglishLibrary hardbacks! 012

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 12/10/2026But seeing as there’s no precise definition of underseen, underrated, cult etc, they’re popular but vague terms. And their defence can always be “you know what I mean”. I’m very tired of non-Hollywood blockbuster films being perpetually ‘discovered’ and continually thrown at me online. 010
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Yeah, but there are books about Fulci. He’s been the next director to seek out in Italian horror after Argento, for decades. There must be a dozen different blu-ray editions of his top horrors. 100

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Most of my favourite music seems to be cinematic! The lyrics/title really stood out for me as relatable. After two decades of “I love you, girl” pop lyrics that wasn’t. 010

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Prelude? Was it made first? I can’t actually remember which I saw first in the UK. Halloween in the cinema or that on TV. 110

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 10/10/2026The Birds by Frank Baker. Found this early reprint of Baker’s 1936 bird apocalypse, set in London. This 1964 reprint was strangely published the year after Hitchcock’s The Birds first hit cinemas. Hitchcock had protected himself by purchasing the rights to Baker’s book for the title and the theme. 242
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 10/10/2026The 1960’s boom in STRANGE paperback collections full of spurious paranormal events grew to include… Hans Holzer’s ghosthunting experiences (1963). He later investigated the Amityville horror house. And a good idea to reprint Charles Fort’s books (written 1919-1932) that started off the genre. 094

Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026For three years, Jon Finch is suddenly a high profile movie actor… Sunday Bloody Sunday, Hitchcock’s Frenzy, Lady Caroline Lamb, Robert Fuest’s The Final Programme… …and then TV! Finch is off the A list and it’s years before another movie role. Ouch! 220
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Rewatched Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers (1970). Skimpy nightgowns and an even skimpier plot, which keeps repeating itself. And why all the shots of Count Karnstein? Goes nowhere! Anyhow, 1970, Jon Finch is in Hammer horrors, waaaaay down the cast list. 1971, the star of Polanski’s epic Macbeth! How? 140
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Grr. Years ago, we went to a Q&A with Freddie Francis at the National Film Theatre and they played the first five minutes from ‘The Man Who Collected Poe’ from Torture Garden. The audience were instantly gripped, and there was a groan when they didn’t show the whole of it! 010
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Thankfully, the five comics have been reprinted several times, both in colour and b/w. The neat way to collect them is to nab the Ballantine paperbacks of Tales from the Crypt (1964) and Vault of Horror (1965). And don’t forget the Bantam paperback movie tie-in novelisation! #AmicusAnthologies 010
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The last tale from the crypt, has starving blind men revolt against their brutal keeper (Nigel Patrick). The bastard. This was adapted from 'Blind Alleys' of Tales From The Crypt #46 (1955). I love the Cryptkeeper’s final line in the story, “…and then some idiot turned out the lights.” 120
Mark H @blackhole.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The fourth segment, inspired by WW Jacobs’ story, The Monkey’s Paw, has Barbara Murray and Richard Greene using up their three wishes. Based on EC Comics 'Wish You Were Here' from The Haunt of Fear #22 (1953). This is the only tale used from the Vault of Horror paperback from Ballantine. 100
