@kimschulz „they (Companions) only speak directly to Repeaters.“ - that’s not entirely correct… companions can talk to each other when in range and you can also configure them to act as repeaters for a more Meshtastic way of working, but on another frequency as the main mesh network.

Repeat Mode
When enabled, your companion node will act as a portable repeater.
This mode is recommended for camping, hiking and search and rescue purposes where repeater infrastructure doesn't exist.
It is restricted to the following frequency ranges:
433.0MHz - 433.0MHz
869.0MHz - 869.0MHz
918.0MHz - 918.0MHz
