in my personal experience, having someone guide me or give suggestions to better my writing has been the best way for me to learn. feedback is important, as long as you're willing to take it. even tho it's my job, i still have room for improvement, and i think that's a valuable mindset to have, too.

obviously writing is a creative medium, so take "rules" with a grain of salt. however, at least knowing general tips and strategies will give you a framework for which to build your writing on. grammar, punctuation, passive vs. active voice, cutting out "fluff" are all skills that take practice.

hi 👋 writing and editing is literally my job, so i can share some advice. first, like others have said, reading as much as you can will only ever be a benefit to you -- both creative writing and journalistic writing. second, while not a fun answer, is to truly learn the "rules" of writing.

even if it's your own friend, call them out!! people don't grow if they only ever have yes-men around them. have hard conversations if you have to. and if they're not willing to listen to you when you speak up, then they probably were never going to be a lasting friend to begin with...

don't let people get away with saying whatever they want just because the internet allows them to be anonymous. there should be consequences for one's actions. even if you're not directly involved in a situation, that doesn't mean you don't have some power/agency. stand up for those around you.
