Part of a casual conversation in Classic Bittic between two traders. There is a fish. #conlangs
Untranslated message in Classic Bittic.Word for word translation. The translated message that reads.

For Heard Struggle of the S.S. Hazardous Magenta. From Quick Sleepy of the S.S. Big Cousin. Your story is inspiring (lit. rising good feeling). I wish mine was such. I joined the Market Corp for what? Massive student debt. I (foolishly) want to be able to vote (lit. government say) for my home island. Now, I am in the void. In 4 days, I’ll see you at Low Fruit Island.

How do you make poems in a language with no phonology? Concepts such as rhythm and rhymes do not translate well into a pictographic language like Bittic. Here, experimented with grammatical parallelism. I hope you all like it! #conlang

A somber message in Classic Bittic showing that phosphorus debt was a thing in early Iridian culture. #conlang
"Raw" untranslated message in Classic Bittic.Word-for-word translation. Hopefully the image resolution is good enough to read. The message translated into English. It reads...

"For Space Station Strength. From S.S. Soft Sun.
In one hexahour, we will leave Space Station New Bamboo for you. We have 40,978 cubic-cubits of bulk bamboo products and three passengers. We couldn’t bring Eclipse and Lucky-life. The government of this space station said that they have phosphorus debt. We don’t have the money for that. We feel terrible. In two days, we will arrive."

(1/2) About Classic Bittic - Chapter 11. Some other glyphs that I hope show the nuances of Classic Bittic Grammar.
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 11:
Some Other GlyphsStatements in Classic Bittic are separated by specific glyph. Unlike the period. This glyph does not need to come after the last statement.

be document gerund big STOP be 1sg gerund sad
“The stack of documents is towering. I am sad.”

A statement can be bracketed by two of these glyphs on each end for emphasis.

STOP STOP yes STOP STOP
“Yes!”Classic Bittic has a glyph for “and”.

and plant animal
“Plants and animals.”

There can be as many nouns after the “and” glyph as the speaker desires.

and machine vehicle small-thing
“Large things, cars, and hand-helds.”Classic Bittic makes a distinction between inclusive and exclusive “or”.

or(incl.) person location
“People and/or places.”

or(excl.) person location
“People or places.”

Like “and”, there can be as many nouns after the “or” glyphs as the speaker desires.

or(excl.) bulk green bulk blue bulk magenta
“Green, blue, or magenta liquids."

About Classic Bittic - Chapter 8. I originally envisioned Bittic's nouns to be classifiers like in Chinese except that they were mandatory in all contexts. Later I realized that it was simpler to analyze the classifiers as the only true nouns. #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 8:
How Nouns WorkClassic Bittic nouns can be combined with content words to refine their meaning.

(from left-to-right)

person fix
“repairman”

machine fix
“fixing machine”

Once a specific noun is combined with a content word, it can be used again by itself without losing the refined meaning.

come animal red yellow sarcastic
“The orange cat arrived.”

go animal
“The animal (implied to be an orange cat) left.”Content words following a noun need to follow a specific order. Generally, they follow this order: Purpose - Material - Origin - Color - Shape - Age - Size - Opinion - Quantity

vehicle medical iridium magenta circle new small good one

“One good small new round magenta ambulance that’s made from iridium.”

All nouns can be prefixed with one of the two demonstratives.

(from left-to-right)

About Classic Bittic - Chapter 6. Being inspired by Tokia Pona grammar, I wanted a particle like "li" but have it do more than just introduce the predicate/verb. I then stumbled upon Hindi-Urdu's light verb system and adapted it for Bittic. #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 6:
How Verbs WorkWhen a verb is combined with one or more content words, the verb loses its independent meaning and turns the following word(s) into verbs.

do food
“eat”

able heart
“able to feel” or “able to love”

rise speech
“begin speaking”When multiple verbs are strung together in Classic Bittic, then they are interpreted as happening in sequence.

arrive fall 1sg
“I arrive and fell.”

This is the same for verb phrases.

rise search go food 3sg animal
“They started searching for and then will eat the animal.”

(1/2) About Classic Bittic - Chapter 4. The Prepositions and showcasing how the language's syntax works. Nothing outstanding here, but I did have the locative come before the main verb so it could be used as a topic marker in a later development of the language. #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 4:
The PrepositionsClassic Bittic has four prepositions.

locative genitive relative dative

The locative (LOC) preposition marks when, how, and where the action occurs and it always appears before the verb.

LOC place finish eye 1sg 3sg
“I saw them at the place.”The genitive (GEN) preposition marks ownership with the owned noun first and the owning noun second.

GEN animal 2sg
“Your animal.”
(note "your" is colored yellow and blue)

The genitive phrase can be treated as a whole noun unit.

have GEN animal 2sg plant
“Your animal has a plant.”The relative clause (REL) preposition works the same as the genitive except it marks a relationship between the main noun (first) and the context (second).

REL animal machine
“The animal of the machine.”

do eye REL animal machine 2sg
“The animal of the machine sees you.”

About Classic Bittic - Chapter 3. Covering the basics of Classic Bittic's syntax. I was inspired by Polish Notation which pairs really well with Bittic's 12 nouns and 13 verbs. #conlangs #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 3:
SyntaxClassic Bittic is distinct for its heavily prefixing grammar. It classifies all words as operators or operands. When forming phrases, operators precede their operands, and heads precede their dependents. Some words can be operators or operands depending on the phrase.

For example, the basic word order is verb-subject-object. The verb is an operator that takes two nouns as operands. Subjects are more salient than objects. (colored for the reader)

make 3sg machine
“They make a machine.”

"make" is labeled "operator" and "3sg" and "machine" are labeled "operands.Noun phrases follow the same pattern. Operators like nouns, case particles, and determiners are at the front with the operands following them. More “salient” operands preceding less salient ones.

GEN animal person
“The person’s animal.”

"GEN" is labeled "operator" and "animal" and "person" are labeled "operands".

GEN and animal plant person
“The person’s plant and animal.”

"GEN" is labeled "1st operator" and "and animal plant" and "person" are labeled "1st operands".

"and" is labeled "2nd operator" and "animal" and "plant" are labeled "2nd operands".

(1/2) About Classic Bittic - Chapter 2. This is a rough summary of the in-universe history of Bittic explaining how a digital language about one of humanity's interstellar colonization efforts before FTL travel was discovered. #conlangs #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 2:
HistoryA fleet exploring unvisited systems within human space visited UMT-1679, a red dwarf, and discovered radio transmissions from the star’s solitary, dead, rocky planet.

The image depicts a blurry picture of UMT-1679 with its sole planet, UMT-1679 a. To the side is a zoomed-in higher-quality image of UMT-1679 a with its moon and a crosshair showing the rough location of the discovered radio signal. The source was on the planet’s surface. A cylindrical device with a shell made from an iridium alloy. Afterwards, many other similar cylindrical objects were found in other remote star systems.

The image depicts a cylinder standing in a flat area with mountains and a perpetual sunset in the background.
Researchers were quick to identify the transmissions as binary messages, and a simple rearrangement of the strings revealed hundreds of glyphs from a language that has been long forgotten. Researchers named this mysterious language Bittic after the binary strings it was based on.

The image shows a stylized presentation of Bittic. How the text works will be explained in later chapters.

Hello all! I'm starting a new presentation series covering my conlang, Bittic, what it is, and how it works. My hope is to describe the whole language by the end of the series. The first chapter covers what makes Bittic Bittic. #conlangs #conlang
About Classic Bittic
Chapter 1:
What Is BitticBittic was a lingua franca used by a spacefaring civilization that inhabited the space around a planet called Iris approximately 1,000 years after humanity’s exodos from Earth. Classic Bittic is the most prominent form that spanned most of humanity’s habitation of Iris and her moons.

The scene depicts a ringed yellow planet in space with stars behind it. The planet has a storm system on it which resembles a red eye.It was not a spoken language. Instead, it used alternating high and low frequency pulses to represent pixels in an ideographic message. Usually, the high frequency pulses (represented by white pixels or “1”) carried meaning while the low frequency pulses (represented by black pixels or “0”) did not.

Every 4-by-4 ideograph or “glyph” must have one “1” in every row or column In other words, rows or columns containing all “0” were not allowed.

Examples of what is and isn't a valid glyph are shown. The first one on the left is valid. All the others are not.Glyphs were composed into “messages” whose total number of pulses had to be a semiprime with a border to aid in deciphering.

Shown are a string of 121 white and black pixels representing an encoded message in Bittic. Below that is an 11-by-11 black-and-white image of the previous message "decoded".

#2 Cooking in micro-gravity has the issue of food floating away. The Iridians solved this by having the food be held by two hot plates, a cooking preference that continued when they made space stations with artificial gravity. #lexember #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript #worldbuilding
thing cook touch touch
“double touch cooker” i.e. a space panini press
The "thing" noun was used instead of "machine" because the "machine" noun implies something large and industrial instead of a home cooking appliance.

thing food fish
“fish steak”
The Iridians practiced aquaponics and salmon is good fish for that.

REL thing food plant dirt
“food of potato”
*usually referred to a kind of hash brown
Potatoes are nutrient rich which works well in the volume-restricted environment of space habitation.

REL liquid alcohol animal bee
“alcohol of bees” or “honey wine”
Bees have it hard here on Earth. So why not allow them to be amongst the stars?

Some details on how Classic Bittic handles people terms showcasing how Iridians viewed the world around them. #lexember #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
Terms for familial relationships in Classic Bittic were made by pairing a family glyph with the glyph for “person”.

From left to right, top to bottom...

person parent
“parent” or “guardian”

person child
“child” or “baby”

person sibling
“sibling”

person cousin
“cousin”

“Parent” and “child” were also used to describe orbited and orbiting bodies respectively using the “thing” noun.

Earth would be called thing parent and Luna would be called thing child. There is also glyphs for “female” [glyph] and “male” [glyph] which can be added to the end of the family term to indicate sex.

person parent female
“mother”

person sibling male
“brother”

Those were most often used in documents tracking genetic relationships. This would’ve been useful to a people who would regularly have small isolated populations.
Names of professions were made with the “person” noun and a content word related to a job.

From left to right, top to bottom...

person flying
“pilot”

person navigation
“navigator”

person medical
“doctor”

person inspection
“inspector”

person cook
“chef”

person government
“politician”When describing someone as being from somewhere, a genitive construction was used.

GEN place city new person
“someone from New City” or “a New Cityan”

GEN place good common person
“someone from the Commonwealth” or “a Commonwealther”

GEN place water high person
“someone from High Water” or “a High Waterite”

Near a moon not too far away. On a day not too long ago. There was Book Lover on a ship. Something broke in that ship. The other crewmembers beat the machine to repair it. Instead, Book Lover read a manual to it. A great spirit came from the machine (lit. of the machine’s outwardness, the great spirit rose). They thanked Book Lover and offered a romantic relationship (lit. two hearts). Book Lover agreed. After many days, Book Lover wanted to go home. The great spirit tried to stop them, but gave a warning.

“Do not touch matter. Why? You won’t be able to return to me.”

Back at Book Lover’s home island, everything was different. The island was incomplete. People were making it. Thoughtlessly, they approached an airlock. It opened and the oxygen touched them. The time from before came to them and they became a baby (lit. new child).

#ConlangNovember 19: The only real change between the older Basic Bittic and the younger Classic Bittic is the change to a heavily prefixing grammar from a more sporadic infixing form. I do plan on demonstrating some semantic changes though. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript

#ConlangNovember 17: Polish Notation was a huge inspiration for the grammar of Classic Bittic. All the colors here are to make reading easier for you. Normally, all the glyphs would be two colors. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
In Classic Bittic, operators precede their operands. Relative clauses work the same.

REL person finish see 1sg
“The person whom I saw.”

Relative clause markers must always have the thing they are referring to right after them, even if it’s an empty “dummy” noun.

do know 1sg REL person finish see 1sg
“I know the person whom I saw.”

Recursion is possible, but it gets confusing after a while...

...the person whom the person whom the person whom the person whom the person whom the person whom the person whom...

#ConlangNovember 15& 16: Playing catch-up... Classic Bittic uses VSO word-order and is strictly head-initial in both nouns and verbs. I'm planning on using the locative particle as a sort of topic-marker but that's for later. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
Classic Bittic forms questions by using the question glyph.

[question glyph]

Yes/no questions are formed by bracketing the statement with question glyphs.

question do see 3sg 1sg question
“Do they see me?”

Open questions are formed by replacing the thing being asked about with the question glyph.

do see 3sg thing question
“What do they see?”

**Note the use of “thing” as a dummy noun to “carry” the question glyph.

#ConlangNovember 14: The closest word Bittic has to "stand" is "stable". I've combined it with all of Classic Bittic's verbs. They're not as minimalist and elegant as Kēlen, but I still like them. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript

#ConlangNovember 13: Depending on the interpretation, Bittic has about 12 nouns and 13 verbs. Nearly everything else are content words that need to follow a noun or verb to have meaning. More complex ideas are expressed through compounding. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
be eat 3sg AND REL plant animal below dirt thing zero
"They habitually eat plants for groundhogs (lit. below dirt animal) and nothing else.

Note that "plant" "animal" and "thing" are the only true nouns in the sentence. They require compounding content words to develop more specific meanings.

#ConlangNovember 12: Bittic has two verbs that can be used to convey that the action has happened sometime in the past. Otherwise, it uses prepositional time phrases. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript

#ConlangNovember 11: Bittic uses Direct Alignment. The reader must rely only on word order to infer who is doing what to whom. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
do see 1sg 3sg
"I see them."

do see 3sg 1sg
"They see me."

Note the lack of change in the pronouns as they swap roles.

#ConlangNovember 10: Bittic is an isolating language. The form of the glyphs do not change depending on grammar. Classifiers, simple verbs, and particles are common. Classic Bittic is special in that its grammar resembles Polish Notation. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
Classic Bittic is distinct for its heavily prefixing grammar. It classifies all words as operators or operands. When forming phrases, operators precede their operands, and heads precede their dependents. Some words can be operators or operands depending on the phrase.

For example, the basic word order is verb-subject-object. The verb is an operator that takes two nouns as operands. Subjects are more salient than objects.

make 3sg machine
“They make a machine.”
Note that the operator precedes the operands.Noun phrases follow the same pattern. Operators like nouns, case particles, and determiners are at the front with the operands following them. More “salient” operands preceding less salient ones.

GEN animal person
“The person’s animal.”

GEN and animal plant person
“The person’s plant and animal.”

#ConlangNovember 8: Since Bittic does not have a phonology, here is are the rules that govern what is a valid glyph. The idea is that every glyph fills out the whole space it occupies, making boundaries between the glyphs clear. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
Glyphs in Bittic are four-by-four grids made up of bits (borders are here to show the individual bits).

Ones are represented by white pixels. Zeros by black pixels.

Every glyph must have at least one “one” bit in every no or column In other words, rows or columns containing all “zeros” are not allowed.

A comparison of glyphs, the first is valid and the other two aren't.
