This bit of space displays many of the interesting ways light can interact with matter, how many can you count?
You can see the caustics made by the bowl on the matte paper , as well as the specular reflection of the scene on it, the beads appear blue in color and focus red light because of Rayleigh Scattering.
The smaller red beads are a clear example of color by absorbtion in a scattering medium where as the green peridot in the back is clear and derives its color from color centers ( Fe2+).
The metals have diffuse reflection and gold can absorb in violet/blue because the energy gap is smaller, where as silver can only absorb invisible UV and reflects all wavelengths equally.
There is even a small blue dot under the Moonstone ring, called Adularescence which is actually the result of structural color made by interference of the Albite and Orthoclase layers.
The more you look the more physical processes you can find, can you name another?

For the Bits of this page: A representation of the 4 ciphers after the decimal point for all possible divisions of the numbers 1-100. Each pixel color represents a different number. I always wondered if there was any structure to the decimals of a divison quotient and well... there is !
A Cayley Table dispalying the patterns found in the division product of all numbers from 1 to 100, the 4 decimal digits are represented with a distinct color are ( see Cayley table on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayley_table)Color legend for the Cayley Table displayed ( from 0 to 9 where 0 is purple and 9 is blue)

Welcome to Bits & Bugs. A small corner of the internet for insects, tiny creatures, curious details, and little projects. Starting with Gonioctena fornicata, a leaf beetle that caught my eye during a walk One of countless tiny wonders that reward a closer look.
