I had a hard time figuring out how to make a water material I didn't hate. Here is the node graph I ended up using in my Poolcore render. There are certainly other (probably better) ways of doing this but this is what I threw together. #Blender #3d
A screenshot of Blender's shading tab showing my scene with two pools of water and the material graph I ended up using. It shows two noise texture nodes being mixed together and sent to a noise map. The noise map is then scaled down and passed to a Glass BSDF node. The Glass BSDF node and a Volumetric Absorption mode are then connected to the material output.

This world dev session was more nostalgic than productive. I imported most of my old models into the scene and made them interactable. The only models depicted that I did not make are the rabbit and the cardboard camera. The infinite mirror and fur shaders are 3rd party prefabs.

Here are more pictures of the triple helix bar stool. I am very happy with the final result.

Tonight's world dev session: triple helix bar stool, lightly worn down couch, textures, and better shaders I will fight the bad lightmapper settings after I finish the modeling.

If this looks like the 3d model was taken directly from the sketch, that's because it was. I used the knife tool to cut a plane according to the picture and then extruded it upward. The whole process took like 5 mins total.

After two years of doing world dev for groups, I am finally making myself a home world! The sketch is a rough layout with extremely bad scaling. The VRC picture is me turning the sketch into a 3d model to get the general feel. I missed the feeling of a new project. #3d #wip #vrchat #blender

I also learned that I can make objects ignore lighting by checking if the ray is coming from the camera. It renders as a glowing object to the camera but is invisible to all other rays like shadows/reflections/etc. (3/3)
A shader setup to make objects ignore lighting. It uses a shader mix node to swap between a transparent shader set up to be invisible and an emissive shader set up to appear solid green depending on what ray is being computed. It is only visible when Is Camera Ray is true.

Here is my test of the new "Thin" shader option in the latest Blender 5.2.0 Alpha. It is made to improve shadows for thin but solid objects like paper and leaves. (1/3) #blender #3d
Two columns of models: a container, a staircase, and a wedge. The left column is solid with the thin shader option turned off. The right column of objects is solid with the thin shader option turned on. Both sides look similar except for how shadows collect in corners and on curves. The difference is very subtle. Two columns of models: a container, a staircase, and a wedge. The left column is transparent with the thin shader option turned off. The right column of objects is solid with the thin shader option turned on. Both sides look significantly different with the transparent models showing what is behind them and the thin models being opaque with soft shadows.

This is something that bothered me back when I played VRChat. Artists would cube project the UVs without tweaks. Objects would look seamless when it would be several in the real world. When I do my models, I go out of my way to ensure realistic visual breaks. Here is an example of what I mean. /rant

The brush strokes of the metal are also marked by arrows to show the directions are different for each bar.A close up render of a computer desk drawer and its surrounding metal frame. This is the same picture as before but with no annotations so people can notice the difference the seams make on a render.

I re-rendered a 9 year old Unity scene of mine in Blender. It was a quick picture for a random hs class. I would credit the prefabs but I have no idea where teenage me found them. All I know is they came from the Unity Asset Store. Next I'll be remaking the scene from scratch! #art #blender #3d

I'll break my silence on here with my favorite rendering fail. Remember to check your pointers! This program was rendering raw heap data because I forgot to point it at the correct address.
