you’re broken. i will put you back together.

[ the words are heavily muffled against the other, barely coherent through wet sobs and breathless hiccups . but the admission is there . entirely and painfully vulnerable . ] [ it wasn’t just missing his brother . it was missing his 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 brother. ] m mm , m-mikey ..

000

[ his tiny, freezing hands fist blindly into the fabric of michael's clothes, clinging to his older brother with a desperate, iron-tight grip, as if terrified michael might suddenly disappear and leave him alone in the dark . ] i - i m , miss, ed you ...

100

[ had been .. so 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 since michael was kind to him . so long since he was just his big brother . ] [ loud wail tears its way out of him — no longer a cry of terror, but the raw, unrestrained sobbing of a little boy who has been hurting for a very, very long time . ]

100

a hollow performance that never felt all that comforting or safe. ] [ but hearing it from michael, here, in this moment ... it feels warm . it feels 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦 . ] [ the simple, soothing gesture — combined with that unexpected warmth — completely shatters whatever fragile walls the child had left . ]

100

[ ... but it doesn't come . ] [ instead, the hand just rests there . so undeniably gentle as it begins to trace slow, rhythmic circles across his frail back . ] [ … 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦. ] [ their father used to call them that .. but whenever william said it, the word had always felt cold and completely empty —

100

[ at the sudden weight of a hand on his back, evan's small frame flinches, just a bit — an unshakeable knee-jerk reaction . ] [ he tenses, instinctively bracing himself for a shove, a hit, or the harsh, bruising grip he had grown so terribly used to in his final months alive . ]

100

+ as his cold, frail arms wrap tentatively around michael’s waist instead, fully clinging to him and softly weeping . … finally .. a sign of trust . somewhat . ] s-ss#rrr y, [ he hiccups, ] i kn kn ow big k kids shouldnt t , cry . [ … he really 𝘪𝘴 the same kid, despite it all . ]

100

+ this is still big brother . the same big brother who used to check the closet for imaginary monsters and let him tuck safely into his side when the nightmares got too much . ] [ his small, trembling fingers let go of the photograph, leaving the paper resting securely in michael’s hand, +

100

[ he doesn’t pull away . despite every instinct screaming at him to flee, despite the terrifying memory of sharp teeth and cruel laughter echoing in the dark corners of his fractured mind, he stays right there . ] [ because beneath it all, beneath the cruel illusions and the terrifying mistakes, +

100

[ the cold, dead weight of his small form presses heavier against michael’s arm, a stark reminder of everything that had been stolen away in a fraction of a secon. ] [ for a long moment, the only sound in the dim space is the faint hum of the air and the ragged, breathless hitch of evan’s sobs . ]

100

+ not too unlike he used to when he was alive . ] i i .. mis s her .

100

[ he was the one who hid behind her skirts when he was scared, the one who cried when she was sad, and the one who had shattered the hardest when she died . they all had taken it hard, of course, but evan … ] [ he lets out a pitiful whimper, suddenly burying his face against his brother’s arm, +

100

[ he lets out a quiet, shuddering sob, his small form leaning just the slightest bit closer to the picture as if trying to crawl back into that memory entirely . evan was … always a mama’s boy . for so long, he had been attached to his mother at the hip . ]

100

[ she was exactly as warm and gentle as he remembered, smiling down at them with a soft curve to her lips … ] m-m .. mommy . . . [ he sounds so small . ] i i f-forgot … sh h she , [ a fresh tear spills over, though this one isn't the dark ink of agony. it's just a regular, sad tear . ]

100

[ and so … he had completely lost his mother’s face in the splintered gaps of his memory, nothing left behind but the fading ghost of her soft humming and the smell of lavender . ] [ but now, looking at the faded picture, the fog breaks . ]

100

+ and while evan fears the cold father who neglected him , cassidy violently hates the monster who slaughtered her . between his own trauma and her vengeful rage bleeding into his consciousness, william's face was the only one burned perfectly into his mind . ]
