James Skelly treating us to an impromptu version of You And Me (And The Beautiful Sea) while a technical hitch was being sorted out during The Coral's show at Koko last night. A gorgeous song from one of the very best albums of the year

Thanks. Not 100% sure, but I think the bassist is Rusty Stone who has been with Go-Kart Mozart and Mozart Estate for a while. You probably know about these two... bsky.app/profile/birm...

That's a great call and it's now on the playlist. It could be real, even though no oboist is credited. Electronic got Helen Powell to play oboe on Some Distant Memory two years later

Sid enjoyed telling us that he'd literally walked to the gig while his bandmates had to fly across the ocean! They're currently on a UK tour with a few dates left, and they're generally pretty active, releasing albums and touring every few years www.thelongryders.com/The-Long-Ryd...

As their set progressed I started to think of them as a great lost pub rock band in the Rockpile mould. They kinda confirmed my thoughts with a great version of the Feelgoods' Going Back Home and reminding us that Will Birch (who was in the audience) produced this classic youtu.be/ACNsRrU8zPc

They're still great. It's like an old-fashioned no-nonsense pub rock gig and you need one of those every now and then!

Yes - that definitely helped, although the original mix of the tune should have been massive everywhere IMHO! Animal Magnet were from London - their popularity in the Midlands was discussed during this radio clip and back at the other place ▶️ www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Thanks Mairi. I think every city and major town had an alternative disco playing similar tunes in the early 80s, where goths, rockabillies and new romantics could happily dance together. Each had its own regional quirks - the Animal Magnet and Tin Tin tunes were untypically big in the Midlands

Digging through the archives, I can't find any record of The Bodines playing ULU on 13 October 1986. I think this may actually have been filmed when they supported The Shop Assistants at the venue 10 days earlier. Great clip either way
