Just returned from The Biggest Week in Birding at the Black Swamp Observatory. It was my first time there, and it was amazing. Met some wonderful people and saw some beautiful birds, like this little owl. Definitely going back next year. 🪶

A few years ago I was watching vultures kettling near our home. Later that day, snow started coming down. I saw big shadows out of the window. The vultures were circling our house. Then, one by one, they all landed in a big norway spruce in our backyard. 9 vultures roosted in our yard. It was epic🪶

The Tropical Kingbird, native to South America and coastal Mexico, is showing up more and more in the US. They are still rare here in LA, but we might need to redraw some range maps soon 🪶

Sometimes, in a new place i'll listen to a Northern Mockingbird's song to learn which birds are in the area. They repeat each call 2 to 5 times, and keep running through their repertoire over and over 🪶 Los Angeles, CA

A swamp I used to frequent in northern New Jersey. Usually 1 or 2 cormorants. This day— a gang hunting together in a pack, herding fish into a narrow area. Herons and egrets would fly ahead of the group to pick off fish. Then they'd fly to reposition themselves ahead of the cormorant group again.
A group of cormorants strategically hunt fish together. Half the group is above water and half below.

Was finally able to do some balcony birding while on the Big Island. Happened to be one of the nicest balconies ever.🪶 🌿 The best view of whale breaches I've had, with 7 breaches. There was also a youngster with the group. Common Mynah missile, Ruddy Turnstones, Ruddy Turnstone, Humpback Whale

Found an African Silverbill roost. The sound attracted me—an absolute wall of calls. Arrived in groups of 5 to 25. Curious how many other species roost with them. Conservative count was 1,100 but wouldn't be surprised if it were 2x that. The soundtrack shorturl.at/horGO Big Island, HI 🪶

Here's an I'iwi (pronounced "EE-ee-vee"), one of Hawaii's most recognizable honeycreepers. This photo is from April, but we're here again visiting family. On the Big Island, I find myself using the compass app a lot, because it has a clear readout of elevation. I'iwi only live above 4,000 feet.

Here's a little follow up image for our discussion a couple weeks ago about Great Horned Owls eating feline friends that are left to roam outside. Look at those FEET. The feet of a generalist predator that will take down a long list of large prey. Hide yer cats, hide yer mice.

Was loading up the van and this little Java Sparrow was watching. Snagged a quick pick (Sony rx10 iv) and sent it directly to my iPhone. Tried editing using the built in photo editor. Results were not great . I think there's a lot of compression that happens in the iPhone. 🪶 Big Island, Hawaii

On our CBC the other day I started before sunrise and had 4 Great-Horned Owls. I watched 2 of them for a while as they called back and forth, joined each other, gave their small partner hoots, flew around some more. It was amazing. I had stumbled upon the perfect observation point. 🪶 1/3

Doing the CBC right now in Southern California, featuring my favorite tree tunnel (opening is about 10-12ft high). A lot of activity this morning. Red shouldered hawk calling out over those trees, cooper's hawk behind me, and a very healthy looking coyote just crossed my path about 5 minutes back. 🪶

I was just telling someone yesterday about Hakalau Forest on Hawaii's big island--also a high altitude rain forest at 6,500ft. The most amazing forest I've walked through. The old growth portion is 🤯. I'iwi going nuts in there, and of course the bird with my favorite name, the ʻAkiapōlāʻau (photo) 🪶
