Everyone wanting to write AND draw their own graphic novel needs to look at this, and plan your finances/side-gigs accordingly. The advance money reeeeally doesn't go as far as you think it does.

you might as well consider the advance the only payment you're (sadly) ever gonna get from a comic publishing deal and plan accordingly that's all i'm gonna say

But money? Small-press publishing is best for cartoonists starting out who have a day job or some other source of support, and you almost invariably have to look at it as a wholesale financial loss that may yield long-term professional benefits at the expense of short-term gains.

With most small publishers, you almost never see royalties even on a modest seller; it's almost always the case that while they take 50% of the profits (larger publishers give you a percentage of cover, which is harder to creatively doctor), 100% of the costs, not 50, are deducted from your end.

The release of HOURGLASS by @birby.bsky.social is less than 2 weeks away and we're counting each grain of sand as the date inches closer and closer. We're not the only ones who have been captivated by this beautiful tale! Theo Stultz, author of recent beauty BLADE OF THE FANE, states:

A thoughtful, dreadful setting with great character moments

RIP to the king

Four panels of David Lynch (older white man with sticky-uppy white hair wearing a rumpled white shirt and dark suit jacket):

1. Serious face. “As soon as you finish a film”

2. Similar serious face “people want you to talk about it”

3. Scrunched-up amused face

4. Slight smile “and it’s, um, the film is the talking”
