An interactive game theory simulation of the alternative (simpler) design: bitpeople.grok.me/simulation. The old/conventional design with "courts" is not abandoned, but, Fable 5.1 analysis shows it was a bit weaker than I had assumed. So the simpler starts to look more appealing.

Good analysis of the collusion attack in "Bitpeople" proof-of-unique-human system. The most basic use-case is a crypto-coin with UBI and its own "one person, one unit of stake" consensus. I put together an architecture for it over the summer, on peoplecoin.dev.

@paulaberman.bsky.social Hi Paula, here is an example of traditional population registration (a social hierarchy) with "one person, one unit of stake" hiercoin.grok.me, running a crypto-coin with UBI but easy to also run a crypto-computer like Ethereum. Something countries could run or other groups.

Johan Ripple - Jipple: jipple.org - one of the two most important innovations in money history, the 3-step multihop coordination (the other being validator alternation by majority vote: Nakamoto consensus or representative democracy - both they and 3-step solve same type of problem).

On Ripple it's trivial to do demurrage (where each node sets their own rate) for universal basic income (a bit like "Circles UBI" - but their design with a shared credit limit for all peers is not good), a concept suggested by AlexJC in 2014. Or my "swarm redistribution" from 2012. @scottsantens.com

No, we only corresponded online, back in the day. I invented my path-based redistribution idea in 2012, was "discovered" and promoted by BitNation in 2014, led to global 1-on-1 video event as a side project. Broke with them in 2018 when Bitpeople was finished. Besides BitNation, not from any group.

Executively. People are not executively well - they're executively coerced. 2020 plandemic was an extreme example of that. But UBI is one way to make people freer. It's been my main reason for my interest in it, from "med. school" in 2009 (where I did a few more semesters recently after pause...)

You can load population in as list, from external population register, sure. The advances to be made is "one person, one unit of stake" also. The alternative to social hierarchy is, as far as I see, the global 1-on-1 video event. A complete formal spec on peoplecoin.dev. AI one-shots implementation.

So they could not have possibly succeeded at any scale. But, they seemed to be up-front with that. They demonstrated the possibility. One problem is people looking for "alternatives" reject the solution that works: the _social hierarchy_ - and are not good enough at finding the actual alternative.

bipedaljoe.bsky.social @bipedaljoe.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Well they did not have a proof-of-unique-person solution - and likely rejected the one that works: the social hierarchy. With BitNation I came up with the 1-on-1 video event. It's an actual alternative. It's "trustless" in the sense there is no social trust structure, just isolated, private, pairs.

Good work! Grantcoin seemed like a serious project. The proof-of-unique-person was underdeveloped - just Stetson as a single authority with a flat level below that with everyone, but this is still a possible solution - it is the hierarchy solution. Unlike "proof-of-humanity" nonsense for example...

(Any project that does central coin + web-of-trust (like Santi Siri's "proof-of-humanity" or similar - and I followed his work since 2015-ish) fundamentally misunderstands how such proof works. It is impossible to use a relative structure like a web-of-trust, has to be a hierarchy-of-trust...)

The two serious ways to do "ubi-coin" is proof-of-unique-human by social hierarchy (hiercoin.org), or, 1-on-1 video event (peoplecoin.dev). The latter is easier, but the former is good to also have in the arsenal - it's compatible with legacy countries or any new social hierarchy. @scottsantens.com

Funding for UBI, when a coin, I think optimal is demurrage. Omar Syed had a nice idea in 2011 to use 1 coin per person as the equilibrium - when a person has 1 coin, the demurrage destroys exactly same amount as received as UBI. The money supply then converges to population_count. arimaa.com/money/

Gavin Wood built the first version of Ethereum, single-handedly, in C++. He was the main co-founder with Vitalik Buterin. Jeffrey Wilckes built the second main implementation in Golang. CirclesUBI was a "copy" partly of my Resilience, but demurrage in WoT is not a bad idea but their approach is bad.

The problem is "crypto" is full of extremists. They, for example, obscure that the next thing after proof-of-stake is "one person, one unit of stake" (as Bryan Ford put it). They generally hate the nation-state and taxes, but "crypto" will _become_ the nation-state. "Crypto-UBI" has direction right.

Aiming not for the moon (a full fledged "crypto-computer" with the 1-on-1 video "Bitpeople" system) but instead the first minimum goal: a "crypto-coin" with UBI secured by people-vote, is likely the best approach. Such a system is extremely simple, while end goal ("crypto-computer") is very complex.

Here you see Gavin Wood (who built Ethereum) copying it mostly, but he is missing the point and gets a few things wrong. But, I really think the 1-on-1 video event could be "it" (alongside web-of-trust basic income, either by demurrage sort of like "CirclesUBI", or my "swarm redistribution").

Hi Mark! I thought Eric Stetson launched Grantcoin and yours was another. I remember your project. My focus was always finding the right protocol, before jumping into things. I've thought since 2015-2018 the video event is it. Gavin Wood recently started imitating it - but his variant is not good.

(The only possible threat to it is... hypothetical point where AI breaks 1-on-1 video Turing test. This is science fiction. Don't know if laws of physics even allow AI to advance to that point. And if that ever happens, most systems would break anyway).

The protocol I designed 2015-2018 is water proof. It's extremely well designed. There is no other project out there that comes close. It's been set in stone, and publicized and popularized since then - and not changed. It grew out of BitNation. You implement with a single prompt. What about funding.

In "hierarchy coin", hierarchies can split and merge freely. It can grow beyond locally by first forming local hierarchies, then simply merging (ADD operation). Small groups (friendship communities, villages, districts) can merge into a larger group, large groups (countries) merge into even larger.

It's not exactly that it rewards contribution, it rewards being a citizen. It's universal basic income as a social right (whereas with Ford's next paradigm, doc.bitpeople.org, it's a _human right_).

Well, the same way a hierarchy does. Throughout all of human history, the social hierarchy is how proof-of-unique-person has been done. Bryan Ford's paradigm (that I perfected by 2018) is the next paradigm, but the hierarchy approach works better for smaller groups (millions rather than billions).

We could just ask Claude AI, it can do it in a few hours. [a few moments later] here, in C++ and Rust, hiercoin.org/hiercoin.cpp and hiercoin.org/main.rs. If we can get people together around a sufficiently simple standard, it ought to be possible to launch some "national" crypto-coins with UBI.
