Nothing makes Sara Thacker feel good the way being top of a cheer pyramid does. The joy comes from a million different things. The roar of the crowd. The marching band playing in her ear. The wind in her scanty uniform. Her fellow friends holding her up. All eyes on her, showering her with praise and applause, applause, applause, for being a pretty girl with pretty eyes and pretty blonde hair. It's fucking perfect. That's what you get for being captain. The captain, of the Leukon Hall Christian Preparatory Academy Cheer Team.

Or at least, it was, before she quit the team. This spring, junior year, she had this... meltdown, the week before regional finals. All that pressure, all those expectations went to her head, and she just... stopped. They tried to compete without her, but didn't even place, and then they turned on her. It wasn't her fault, she tried to convince everyone. But everyone blamed her. Everyone called her a traitor. Sara Thacker was a disappointment.

After her episode, her parents made her go to group therapy. There was only one therapist in Hillsboro, Oregon, a pleasant older woman by the name of Jane Hanslow—though everyone called her Dr. Jane. Her methods were admittedly unconventional. Hanslow believed in therapeutic hypnosis, and this niche psychological theory she called Radical Animalism. Still, Sara came to appreciate and respect her like a mentor. She taught her so much about herself, and filled her head with so many useful new tools for managing her anxiety. She felt like... well, she felt like a whole new person.

Took me a few days to get around to it but it's read now and as per usual, you knock it out of the park. I felt that this one had some stronger (or at least more obvious) trans themes around passing and the horrors trans women are pushed to in order to be accepted as women. 10/10 💕
