Tonight is the full Harvest Moon

This particular full moon is special for cultures and traditions around the world, coming, as it does, four days after the Equinox. In Japan, the first autumn moon marks the traditional festival of Tsukimi (literally "moon-viewing"), to express gratitude to nature for a bountiful autumn crop. It marks the start of Pitru Paksha, a sacred 16-day period where Hindus pay homage to their ancestors. It coincides with the Mid-Autumn (or Moon) Festival, which is one of the most important holidays in Chinese, Vietnamese, and other East Asian cultures, a time of family reunion, completeness, and gratitude for the harvest. People gather to light lanterns, eat mooncakes (anyone have a recipe)...and gaze at the luminosity of the lunar orb.
