Me neither. I thought I indisputably and unambiguously was English, but it turns out that a bit of Irish, Welsh and Jewish heritage has done for me.

It is a truly bizarre assertion. Not only geography, but our AngloSaxon/Roman/Norman history and language, our intensely European royal family, so much of our modern history, our intellectual and cultural evolution, our economic and everyday interactions, our ethnicity - all so very European.

It was the Cold War that was the exception in US behaviour. Trump is a return to 'normal'. Europe was wrong to trust the US so much and accept its dependency on the US.

Bill Park @billpark.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It would indeed be a serious mistake, because Trump is not an aberration but a return to a US that was happy to stand aside as 1939-41 Germany attacked and occupied its neighbours - until Pearl Harbour attack and Hitler declared war. Also stayed out of League of Nations, and delayed WW1 entry.

Will international media ever start covering Russia’s ongoing genocide? Ukrainians in Russian occupied Oleshky are eating grass and weeds to survive and the world stays silent 😭

'Nothing left to eat' — Sybiha urges partners to act on Oleshky humanitarian crisis
Oleshky's population has fallen from around 24,000 to approximately 2,000 as of spring 2026, according to the Foreign Ministry.

People in Oleshky have no food and are surviving on grass and weeds, a desperate measure that won't even be an option in the winter. Real pressure must be applied to Russia to allow people to evacuate!

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.
It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to
Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate
from the people. He has no real ideas, and
no plan,

BOLTON: Europeans imposed 21 sanctions packages on Russia over 4 years. They should've been imposed all at once in February 2022. That, and strict enforcement, would've had much greater effect. Gradual escalation of sanctions has been a mistake, they can and should be tightened.

Happy Ukrainian Flag Day. 🇺🇦 This flag has come to represent far more than a nation. Freedom, Defiance, Sacrifice & Resilience. From occupied cities to the frontline, Ukrainians have fought, suffered and died beneath these colours. The flag still flies in 2026 Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦

Yep. Russia has a problem of knowing when/where to stop - its is already 30% non-Russian (eg Chechnya etc) , and wants/has wanted to control Ukraine, Belorussia, Moldova, Caucasus states, Baltics, Finland, Central Asia, Poland, central Europe, northern Kurile islands, Afghanistan, Iran etc etc

Russia killed or injured more civilians in Ukraine in July 2026 than in any month since March 2022. We need air defense, it is not a whim. We need it to save lives.

BROWDER: Putin's whole projection of power internationally is completely hollow now. Russia looks like second-tier regional power. That's where Putin is now. He's not superpower everybody thought he was before. We now see Russia for what it is: a corrupt, mid-level failed state.

Depends on what one thinks the job is. Privatisation was not aimed at ensuring greater efficiency, better service etc. It was aimed at transferring wealth to the already wealthy. Public utilities were basically given away, and there is little regulation of performance. So, they are doing their job.

"Greenland should be controlled by the US, not by Denmark", Trump said this week, reopening old wounds. The Danish PM reacted furiously: "We will defend our territory!" By jeopardising unity within NATO, Trump once again shows he will not help Europe if it is attacked by Russia; he doesn't care.

..erm, Belgium are not bad you know, have experience and a long-established and deep football culture. The US might have won it, but not 'should' have won it. But I'm sure Trump didn't help; the US team did look like a shadow of their former selves.

For the most part, the US - not least Trump - has no clue about football - what it means, how it is run, what are its conventionsetc. FIFA decided to hold (most of) this World Cup there, and this is a consequence.

Doesn't this miss a rather simple fact - that European industries are being overwhelmed by Chinese imports? For example, how does your observation address the fact - fact - that Chinese car imports are increasing, and European car sales are struggling? From shipyards to mobile phones (Nokia)....etc
000
Bill Park @billpark.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
Very uneasy about this thread. European industry - the car industry is next in line - is being wiped out by a Chinese 'competitor' that operates according to different rules and practices. It is hard to see how politically, let alone why, Europe should be passive in the face of that.

Not convinced by this. Japan hasn't fully accepted its guilt for WW2 atrocities, but its surely a safe neighbour, no? Russia and Russians simply need to adopt the attitude the rest of Europe has adopted - its better to befriend one's neighbours, trade with them etc, than to threaten them.

The exact same attitude that kept the US out of WW1 in 1914 and WW2 in 1939. Because its the same US. And its making the same mistakes.

Ditto Starmer. There is no way to deal with Trump - he simply wants 'allies' to accept everything he says and does and do everything he asks them to do, now. And even then another mood change might find reasons for him to be critical. Ignore him.

Totally agree. Yes, there is intelligence and military cooperation, but others have such relationships with the US too. The US was nowhere to be seen in 1939 - the Blitz, Battle of Britain - nor in 1914. It took attacks on the US to bring it into the war, not the UK's plight.

Shouldn't voters look at themselves? They don't like NHS waiting lists, the behaviour of privatised utilities eg water, potholes, the economic consequences of Brexit, slow asylum procedures, the rich getting ever richer and, yes, immigration etc. But they voted Tory, which enabled all these things.
