On August 28, 1939, crews were inside Rock Island Illinois' newly constructed concrete domes cleaning and waterproofing. In a split second, a single spark from a worker’s cigarette ignited the concentrated vapors trapped within the dome’s structure. Three workers were killed.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

WGA Statement on ABC’s Decision to Pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The right to speak our minds and to disagree with each other - to disturb, even - is at the very heart of what it means to be a free people. It is not to be denied. Not by violence, not by the abuse of governmental power, nor by acts of corporate cowardice.
As a Guild, we stand united in opposition to anyone who uses their power and influence to silence the voices of writers, or anyone who speaks in dissent. If free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn't have bothered to write it into the Constitution. What we have signed on to - painful as it may be at times - is the freeing agreement to disagree.
Shame on those in government who forget this founding truth. As for our employers, our words have made you rich.
Silencing us impoverishes the whole world.
The WA stands with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers.

A nationalist encourages us to be our worst, and then tells us that we are the best.
A patriot, by contrast, wants the nation to live up to its ideals, which means asking us to be our best selves.
A patriot has universal values, standards by which he judges his nation, always wishing it well and wishing that it would do better.

Our natural fear and grief must not enable the destruction of our institutions.
Courage does not mean not fearing, or not grieving. It does mean recognizing and resisting terror management right away, from the moment of the attack, precisely when it seems most difficult to do so.
James Madison nicely made the point that tyranny arises "on some favorable emergency."

On February 27, 1933, at about nine p.m., the building housing the German parliament, the Reichstag, began to burn.
853F118
Whether or not the Nazis set the fire, Hitler saw the political opportunity:
"There will be no mercy now. Anyone standing in our way will be cut down."
The next day a decree suspended the basic rights of all German citizens, allowing them to be "preventively detained"by the police.
On the strength of Hitler's claim that the fire was the work of Germany's enemies, the Nazi Party won a decisive victory in parliamentary elections on March 5
(Cont!),The police and the Nazi paramilitaries began to round up members of left-wing political parties and place them in improvised concentration camps.
On March 23 the new parliament passed an "enabling act," which allowed Hitler to rule by decree.
Germany then remained in a state of emergency for the next twelve years, until the end of the Second World War.

Be calm when the unthinkable arrives.
Modern tyranny is terror management. When the terrorist attack comes, remember that authoritarians exploit such events in order to consolidate power.
The sudden disaster that requires the end of checks and balances, the dissolution of opposition parties, the suspension of freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book.
Do not fall for it.

Listen for dangerous words.
Be alert to the use of the words extremism and terrorism.
Be alive to the fatal notions of emergency and exception.
Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary.

The fact that most Americans do not have passports has become a problem for
American democracy.
Having a passport is liberating, since it creates the possibility of new experiences.
It allows us to
us to see how other people,
sometimes wiser than we,.
react to
similar problems.
Since so much of what is happening now is familiar
to the rest of the world
or from recent history,
We
must
observe and listen.

Make sure you and your family have passports.

It is gratifying to know that, whatever the course of events, you are helping others to do good.
Many of us can afford to support some part of the vast network of charities that one of our former presidents called "a thousand points of light."
Those points of light are best seen, like stars at dusk, against a darkening sky.

American democracy retreated before. It recovered from those periods not because its survival was inevitable but because Americans — including many who disagreed with one another on other subjects — fought bravely and smartly for this country’s ideals.

What the great political thinker Hannah Arendt meant by totalitarianism was not an all-powerful state, but the erasure of the difference between private and public life.
We are free only insofar as we exercise control over what people know about us, and in what circumstances they come to know it.

Establish a private life.
Nastier rulers will use what they know about you to push you around.
Scrub your computer of malware on a regular basis. Remember that email is skywriting.
Consider using alternative forms of the internet, or simply using it less. Have personal exchanges in person.
For the same reason, resolve any legal trouble. Tyrants seek the hook on which to hang you. Try not to have hooks.

For resistance to succeed, two boundaries must be crossed.
First, ideas about change must engage people of various backgrounds who do not agree about everything.
Second, people must find themselves in places that are not their homes, and among groups who were not previously their friends.
Protest can be organized through social media, but nothing is real that does not end on the streets.
If tyrants feel no consequences for their actions in the three-dimensional world, nothing will change.

Practice corporeal politics.
Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on the screen.
Get outside. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people.
Make new friends and march with them.

In the most dangerous of times, those who escape and survive generally know people whom they can trust.
Having old friends is the politics of last resort.

People who were living in fear of repression remembered how their neighbors treated them. A smile, a hand-shake, or a word of greeting - banal gestures in a normal situation -
took on great significance.
When friends, colleagues, and acquaintances looked away or crossed the street to avoid contact, fear grew.
You might not be sure, today or tomorrow, who feels threatened in the United States.
But if you affirm everyone, you can be sure that certain people will feel better.

Make eye contact and small talk.
This is not just polite. It is part of being a citizen and a responsible member of society.
It is also a way to stay in touch with your surroundings, break down social barriers, and understand whom you should and should not trust.
If we enter a culture of denunciation, you will want to know the psychological landscape of your daily life.
