I'm in Ohio - just because we "support" the feature doesn't mean the average police is going to accept it as valid ID.

Shouldn't be, the whole area was a new build a few years back and I'm on XGSPON. I have a cloned ONT SFP+ so I can avoid the ATT gateway, but am still limited to 1Gb even with the gateway. 🤷‍♂️ I need to call and see if they'll drop my price on 1Gb or give me more speed for same price...

Also, I'm jealous that you are actually overprovisioned on 1Gb; for some reason my home connection stops at 1Gb (I've tried using a 2.5Gb interface and it stops at 1Gb or even 940ish, like there's a 1Gb link somewhere causing a limit, which makes no sense)

You may not be able to join the NTP pool unless you're on a business account. For a long time ATT blocked inbound port 123 on residential service

Admittedly I haven't touched Win-Excel in quite a while but it looks largely the same as 2016, I thought? I definitely don't want him on the web version... at that point I'd just make him use Sheets. (He pays for GWorkspace)

I had to stop what I was doing at $dayjob to help my father with this (self-employed CPA). I really need to get him on a newer copy of Office...

TIL that Microsoft somehow managed to break "Ctrl+C to copy" in MS Excel (albeit an older version, Excel 2016) with a fucking security patch. learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answer... There is no facepalm large enough

We love our EV, I believe it was even made in Georgia (Hyundai) He is a petulant child who resorts to name calling because he has no manners or thoughts beyond himself Can't wait for him to be replaced.

Pick a better insurance company is another way around that problem. As someone who does track days and used to autocross, I would have major problems if my rates were based on that shit

NFC/BT could do local unlock if you're close enough, yes, but my own car is too old (2018 model year) to support it. Mine was one of the first to have wireless CarPlay though. The remote climate thing kinda needs a "connected" car to be worthwhile unless you can see your lot from your office

Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 18/09/2026
I've used the app-based internet unlock on my own car too (BMW). I had dropped the key in a key slot while leaving the car at a detailer, but then realized I forgot something in the (locked) car. The app saved a lot of hassle. I agree they are largely just "niceties" though

IDK, my wife has a good 5-10 minute outdoor walk from her office to her parking garage. In the dead of Midwest fimbulwinter, I think that pre-conditioning her Ioniq5 is a nice perk. Doubt we'd pay extra for it after it expires though

The catch is the automakers don't really care about long term. They are chasing those sweet monthly or yearly recurring fees for their (inevitably less-functional) platform. The one piece the phone can't do is the remote status / lock / climate / start stuff...

I do this at work all the time, but I get ignored and we do it anyway. Most of the time, we end up regretting the choice. I don't like being negative, but apparently I can see this crap more readily than others in my company 🤷‍♂️

I paid $5.349 at Costco yesterday (it was Premium / 93 though). Normally I don't blame the president for the price of oil, but this time the war *is* all his fault, and it does directly impact oil. So yeah, idiot in chief screws USA, again

We're not weirdos, we realize that with widescreen displays it makes more sense to put docks on the sides so we can keep vertical real-estate for content/apps. I've considered rotating one display 90° for more vertical but my orderly bits hate the asymmetry

Congress Didn’t Just Defund Public Media, It Defunded the Emergency Alert
The stations going dark this year aren’t NPR tote-bag liberalism. In much of rural America they’re the last local signal — and part of the system that tells you a tornado is coming.

The amount of times i see other drivers WATCHING VIDEOS ON THEIR PHONE while ostensibly "driving" is way too high... 😖 My phone *is* visible to me, but only as an auxiliary display for my radar detector (I occasionally glance at it for alerts). These two cases are very different but law is blind

The goatse.cx shock image, but the man's gaping anus has been replaced with a ring of bread and appears in a cookbook with a caption referencing "pulling the bread from the center hole."

The hands appear to be from the original image.

For the record I'm not complaining, I think it's silly to censor language, and I know it isn't broadcast TV so IDK if they actually have to adhere to any FCC rules. If this is a mistake I'm sure someone's gonna get chewed out though

Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 21/08/2026
Apparently USA (tv network) DGAF about censoring anymore, I've now heard multiple "fucks" in their current airing of "Speed". It's like 8:45pm, too

Ironically, it's very close to the half-time speed of John Cena's walk out song ("The Time is Now" is ~87bpm halftime, while Sam's song is 85bpm)

Yeah we have a 2 car attached on the back of our split level. The entry is stairs down to a door. It's in front of my car so I don't have room for a long vehicle... to the left side I have a little room (stairs there), but it's still not a lot of space. I'd love a 3 or 4 car garage

I use my battery (old Craftsman!) impact way more than my air one though; I have a big 30gal compressor and long hose but it's WAY easier to use a battery tool

They are great in concept, but each frame weighs like 80-100 lbs I believe. Setting them up the first time requires a bottle of ATF as the hydraulic fluid and everything has to be bled, plus I think they may also need air at a specific PSI. Lack of hanging space is part of why they're not in use

Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 11/08/2026
The worst is when you get one of those tools and find out it's a huge pain in the ass to setup and then store (I have Quickjacks and haven't unboxed them, because it's easier to just jack up half the car at a time when swapping wheels)

FWIW I work for a fixed wireless (non-cellular) ISP, but we are also reselling T-Mobile 5G in a roundabout way. I've got some "industry knowledge" here, although I don't directly work for any cell company
010
Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 24/07/2026
Almost all 5G service is ipv6-only, and any v4 address you get is shared behind CGNAT. This can make hole punching for remote homelab access kind of annoying, unless you're already using Tailscale or CloudFlare to handle external access. The "backup" plans are typically capped after X GB.
100
Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 24/07/2026
Almost all of the 5G providers don't want you using your own modem. Some T-Mobile plans might work with other modems but probably not all of them VZ is very strict. Unsure about ATT's 5G. Plans that "allow" other devs (CradlePoint/etc) are usually way more expensive
000
Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 24/07/2026
My dad used them for business briefly and swore he'll never touch T-Mobile again after that experience. • Worked great for a few months then got slow and crappy • blocked some websites and took me an hour with support to get it fixed • they tried to charge for unreturned hardware that he returned

Braden McGrath @big-geek.net · 24/07/2026
You should see if you have a WISP available so you don't have to suffer through the IPv6-only hell that is 5G internet...

Does MS *still* have an accessibility team, or was that lost along with most of their test/validation people ages ago?
