LLMs could be the end of the “shut up and calculate” approach to fundamental physics. (Not that Kyle is part of that.) When the computer is better at calculating than you are, you might be forced to actually think about things.

On November 2, I’ll be in Washington, DC, for a conversation with Slavoj Žižek sponsored by How To Academy. The title is Signs from the Future, which makes me worry about the arrow of time! Drama already. howtocademy.com/signs

What happens to science when AI can reason, discover, and maybe even outpace us? We sat down with Scott Aaronson to discuss what it means to be a scientist in the age of AI. youtu.be/Qjgc9Hs5GKs

"Boltzmann Brains" is a fanciful name for a dead-serious idea. I'm beginning to wonder whether the name hasn't caused the physics community to not spend nearly enough time thinking carefully about the problems that they pose. We have Boltzmann Brain Blindness. Long 🧵 coming. ⚛️ #cosmology (1/n)

Math proofs online, physics research accelerating—as much as could be said about any period in history, this really does feel like a pivotal moment for humanity. I’m just glad to be alive.

I'm sad to report that Mark Wise, theoretical physicist at Caltech, has passed away. He was my friend and collaborator, a giant of theoretical physics, and just one of my favorite people. RIP. www.pma.caltech.edu/people/mark-...

Mindscape 358 | Solo: Vacuum Energy and the Cosmological Constant. I start talking about why the universe is accelerating -- but there was too much to say, so next week we'll have a follow-up episode. #MindscapePodcast www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2026...

An old fable for Dualities in Physics: Once, a group of blind men were asked to describe an elephant. As they reached out to touch it, the one who felt the trunk said it was a snake. Another touched the body and said it was a wall. But in reality, they were all trying to describe the same thing.

The paradoxical nature of our world has led to many discoveries and here’s one that’s still unresolved: The laws of quantum mechanics are perfectly reversible, yet the world we experience is irreversible. 0/7

As I near 5th yr of PhD in Physics, I reflect on lessons beyond eqns, papers & prob-solving. It has taught me patience, humility, resilience & comfort with uncertainty. If you’re considering PhD in fundamental science, I hope this aids honest entry with less fear. 0/5

We have created a world with previously unimagined material abundance, and yet we have organized society such that many people struggle with loneliness and alienation. Now we're offering tools that enhance delusion and paranoia. www.404media.co/delusion-usi...

Remembering the innocent lives lost in the Pahalgam terror attack one year ago today. We stand with the families who continue to carry this loss. As a nation, we remain united against terror, unwavering in our resolve.

Mathematicians call prime numbers the building blocks, analogous to atoms. I find this weird. In physics, building blocks have a smaller scale associated with them, while prime numbers are at the same “scale” as all other numbers. How do you think about this?

Albert Einstein passed away on this day in 1955, from complications associated with a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. His doctors recommended surgical intervention. Einstein replied "I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."

In 1978, Yau and Schoen used variational methods to give the first proof of the Positive Energy Conjecture in general relativity (Witten gave a separate proof two years later that used entirely different methods). The paper was submitted in September and appeared in print in February of the following year.
In general relativity, unlike in other classical field theories, there is no meaningful local notion of the energy density of the gravitational field. You can't just visit every point in a region, measure some quantity, add it to a running total, and then call that result the total energy of a gravitating system. One way to see the reason for this obstruction is to appeal to the
