The techno-dystopia I actually fear is a future where most people think truth is whatever Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok say, and the very small number of people who control those systems use that to manipulate for their own ends, making our current epistemic crisis seem small in comparison.

Not quite what I meant. More that Rumsfeld was an evil spirit in the room, making things worse. A pity that it is so easy for a government to start a war on a surge of vengefulness. Any European could have told them from recent experience that terrorism feeds on that exact emotion.

I know about that. Unfortunately it is easy to misuse patriotism to start wars far from home. Wars should be the last tool in the politicians’ toolbox, not the first. I understand that Rumsfeld had a big hand in promoting the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. W was an easy victim.

Thank you. I have missed hearing an American say this. It has been my understanding all along. I remember sitting on the SF-Denver train on 9/12, listening to shocked Americans, and keeping my mouth firmly shut, except to say ‘no wars, please,’ they don’t help fight terrorists.

Dane here. The original 1951 agreement had a number of undeclared assumptions built in. These have now been made explicit. And Greenland’s and Denmark’s rights to self-determination and sovereignty has been emphasised. No win for Trump, except in his imagination.

Because apart from more precise language about non-Nato bases not being allowed (they never were), emphasis on Greenland/Denmark sovereignty, and precise mention of Nato’s leading role - all of it assumed though not explicitly written in the 1951 text - there is nothing new in the agreement.

My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

Helt enig. Men du skal nok liiige klappe din begejstringshest. Togpriserne er fortsat en hel del højere end flypriserne, og det tæller. Jeg havde studenterjob hos DSB rejsebureau i 1974, da var flyrejser stadig så dyre, at DSB kunne sende tog fulde af turister til Italien. I dag er det omvendt.

If the law explicitly says X, and you claim the law says X while I claim the law says Y, then you’re right and I’m wrong. But the current standard in the US is that if the law says X but Republicans feel Y, everyone must pretend the law says Y, or at least that Y is a reasonable interpretation.
