We learned just before the holiday weekend began that a significant portion of the funding we expected to receive was no longer available, leaving us with a $50,000 gap to fill to complete our work in 2026.

The store’s grand opening is Sept. 19. James Harris, its owner, said it is the first of many to come to Birmingham. But he said it will be the last that he and his family own. “All of the future Carver Jones (stores) will be owned by the Carver Jones Foundation,” Harris said Wednesday.

The Hospital-Linked Violence Intervention Program, a partnership between the Offender Alumni Association and the Jefferson County Board of Health, enables patients who have survived gunshot injuries to engage with violence intervention specialists while still in the hospital.

In the only other Jefferson County race on the runoff ballot, Brighton City Clerk Mykeshia Myles Jones bested incumbent Ron Marshall in the race for assistant tax collector in the Bessemer Division. Jones took 52.76% of the vote.

BREAKING via Anna Barrett: A three-judge panel on Tuesday morning blocked Alabama from using a 2023 congressional map the panel ruled racially discriminatory and ordered the state to use a remedial map aimed at giving Black Alabamians a chance to elect their preferred leaders.
