Interested in what the comparative poli sci says on this. EU MEPs are famously super well paid for example. But not famously good. But that’s a small sample.

Can Democrats not just pack the court now?

If they wanted to could they still pack the court in Virginia and get some sort of new ruling?

@adamtooze.bsky.social In your follow-up episode you discussed NY and the NY mayor Mamdani’s limited ability to raise taxes for his priorities. Would be interesting to hear you explore the revenue potential of NY’s biggest untapped billion $ resource. On street parking. Also to improve livability.

True. But sociologically I wonder if it hides a ’bias to normalcy’ amon all of us where we rationalize whatever situation we are in. See the covid experience as an example. Suddenly being forced to stay in, isolate and mask up became ’normal’.

I find a similar issue with outcome predictions. I have come to basically acknowledge that I can’t properly differentiate what I want to happen with what I ’think’ will happen - expect that many others are similar. One reason why I liked 538 and NSs election forecast. At least a predefined model.

Be kind. You may think its a competitive dog eat dog world. But you will get so much out of just being kind. Be honest, be kind, work hard (sometimes), go all in on (some)things. Make sure to meet friends you want to keep in touch with at least once every two years or its slips away. Be kind.

With him it always struck me how clearly ’pride’ was his sin. He did what he did to ’look’ correct. And because it was important that the FBI ’look’ apolitical. Not ’be’ neutral. It was calculated. And he calculated that Hillary would win and he would ’look’ good and there would be no consequences.

Agreed! But A LOT has to be done with street design. I have young kids and am super conscious of the importance of driving slowly. BUT wide straight streets without obstacles invite higher speeds. If the sign says 20mph but the street design says 40mph that is what you end up with.

It makes sense if you consider that ’Seperation of church and state’ is more about protecting the church from the state than about protecting the state from the church.

Not a European ideological realignment but it does open the way for a better functioning EU. Its also testament again if ever it was needed that these types of right wing populist reactionary regimes are ALWAYS driven by corruption also which creates a backlash. See Poland, Turkey, and now the US.

Long story short. Economic mismanagement leading to country being poorest perfomer in EU which increased salience of corruption and all the other sins of the regime.

Formerly worked for a company with a small but still significant legacy defined benefit US pension program. When they would report the changes in projected liabilities the impact of increased opiate abuse for US seniors starting in the 2000s was a very significant impact.

GDP growth per active worker must look a lot better for Japan tho’? Add in a average salary vs average house price metric and it looks even better versus Europe or US. I remember Japan at its comparative peak in the late 80s and it was booming but very expensive for the average Takamoto.

Dem DOJ drafts a memorandum with their opinion that ’pardon’s in furtherance of a crime’ or ’pardon’s issued on a day ending with a y’ or suchlike are unconsititutional then pursue each and everyone of them to the point of bankruptcy. Fire the process is the punishment gun right back at them.

"This is what you get when you elect Republicans." Every Dem within 100 feet of a camera needs to be saying this repeatedly. Every time we elect Republicans, we get dumbass wars, tax cuts for rich people, and financial crises. Every time. Fucking say it!

The queue of grovellers for pardons in the late Trump era will be something to behold. Big reason they will stay ’loyal’ after leaving and praise him… he holds the pardon power over them.

Its costly, requires either good credit ratings or a lot of cash for margining, neither of which airlines have and done incorrectly or having some bad luck can easily bankrupt an airline. As competitors don’t hedge either they can maintain competitive equilibrium by all not hedging.

I’m curious about that first cabinet meeting in ’17 where they the whole cabinet one by one went around and obsequiosly praised Donald Trump. How was that planned/ordered/prompted by his entourage or was it actually impromptu? And what were they thinking as they said ridiculous demeaning things.
