Ben Greiner @bgreiner.bsky.social · 13/05/2025I agree that such carelessness is bad. But I have also seen several cases where an IRB forbid researchers to share any data (even cleaned/anonymous) for blanket privacy reasons. That’s bad too. There is a difficult trade-off/conflict between transparency ethics and privacy ethics, needing balancing. 071

Ben Greiner @bgreiner.bsky.social · 07/01/20252) Does the argument provide sufficient reasoning or evidence that this different treatment effect is expected to be observed? If the two conditions are fulfilled, then there is a next paper (or additional work for this paper). If not, then the criticism is either too broad or too speculative. 3/3 030
Ben Greiner @bgreiner.bsky.social · 07/01/2025I think the soundness check for any external validity criticism should include two components: 1) Is the criticism specific enough? Does the argument specify that a particular *treatment* effect/mechanism should not be observed in a particular important different environment? 2/3 110
Ben Greiner @bgreiner.bsky.social · 07/01/2025Agree. I find most of the external validity criticisms simply boring. (It’s also what my undergraduate students come up with first when asked to state limitations of an assigned reading.) After all, an external validity concern can be raised for almost *any* study using *any* method/dataset. 1/3 130
