RIP to the great Jack DeJohnette, giant of jazz drumming. Listening to his trio album Music We Are in honor. #jazz #vinylsky

This friend took up shop outside my living room window this morning. I know she’s a common yellow garden spider, but still pretty cool.

Really enjoyed Jessa Cristin’s What’s Wrong with Men. The central conceit of treating Michael Douglas’s roles from the ‘80s and ‘90s as a single composite character who demonstrates the collapse of the patriarchy is brilliant. #booksky

According to Meta AI, I am the co-author of the Oxford Handbook of Bibliomancy. I…don’t think this book exists.

Just ran a 9:30 mile, and I think it’s time for me to ride into the running sunset. No need to be Michael Jordan with the Wizards - I’m retiring while I’m on top. Or maybe I’ll just run again in a couple of days.

Heading to Chicago tomorrow for the American Society of Church History annual conference. First time I’ve been to this meeting. I’m the respondent for a panel on the rhetoric and theology of monstrosity in church history - should be all kinds of fun.

Just finished reading @orringrey.com’s excellent Never Bet the Devil. So much of horror is about cruelty; but there’s this thread of kindness running through Grey’s work. Terrible things happen, but so many of the characters keep struggling to find ways to be kind to each other in the midst.

Noah Gundersen had 8 songs from his White Noise sessions that he didn’t put in the album; you can stream them, and they were available physically as this series of 4 7”s. I found the last two to complete the collection yesterday!

We have a cover!!! The Oxford Handbook of Biblical Monsters is in production. We tried to put together articles that would foster a dialogue between traditional scholarship and more contemporary monster/horror. Now it's waiting, and preparing for the fun that will be proofing and indexing.

Here’s what I read in August. (Or at least finished reading - I’ve been working through that French book a couple pages at a time for months.) @danielkraus.bsky.social ‘s Whalefall is a hell of a novel - wouldn’t be at all sad if it wins this year’s Stoker.
