I’m so irresponsible, I don’t own a pet. But if I could, I’d own a songbird farm. Somebody should be raising songbirds.

You are likely familiar with Redfish creek spawning channel. I like that spot for private viewing.

I love that area. Wish I had more time to explore the coast.

Those big leaf plants are Salmon Berries. Those plants are looking weak because the old growth cedars block the light. But in an open area these plants thrive and have a soft raspberry like berry. Good to eat but too small to really be worth it. Nobody picks them.

They go upstream and die. There was only about 10 dead ones but they all die.

It’s a 45 km one way hike from the west kootenay’s of British Columbia to the East Kootenays. If you are familiar with it, Argenta to Panorama (sort of). Instead of a drop vehicle, Will and I did it both ways. A day and a half of old growth cedar forest

Once the bears start showing up it’s really cool. Lots of Bald Eagles too.

This kootenay lake/river merges with the Columbia River just south of here. This is coming down from the Kokanee glacier but filers quite fast. You can drink the water ( not during spawning or at spring runoff) but it’s nice and clean.

Forestry, WCB, and others moved to Kelowna or Victoria but demand for Nelson is high. I work at the post office and see where people are moving here from. Lots from Ontario, but US people and most other provinces are coming too.

We don’t have industry here. Work from home people bring their own job. Demand for the few homes that we have goes way up.

They gather at the creek mouth then work their way up laying eggs after flicking stones out to make a dip or hole. The males then fertilize the eggs. The fish will die afterwards. The crowd gathered because they are waiting to jump over a hard part.

Remote working is a big factor in all the rural home prices jumping. I have 3 friends that all bought out here and work remote in a different province.

That’s a big complaint in Nelson right now. House prices are high. But it’s definitely quieter than the Island.

A scene similar to this is happening in all the creeks on this lake right now. It’s pretty cool for sure. This is flowing right through a campground. I wouldn’t walk my dog at night.

So far I haven’t seen a lot of bear poo so I think the bears are still up eating huckleberries. I only saw about 10 dead fish. Once the dead ones add up the bald eagles will gather and the bears will follow. Nothing better than sitting with a glass of wine watching bears lol.

They are ready to die so not good eating. But the bull trout and Gerrard Rainbow trout that wait where the river meets the lake can be huge, and they are worth catching.

I have a smoked salmon bagel every day for lunch! It’s my favourite. Not these old ones. They are beaten up and ready to die. But I also love smoked salmon. Yummy.

The homes on this lake either use water boxes if they have a stream nearby, or run a black pipe into the lake and use it for their drinking water. Just need a basic filter.

They just started coming up the creek. I only saw about 10 dead ones but soon there will be hundreds. But it doesn’t get too stinky. This creek runs right through a campground and the smell doesn’t get bad. I’ve camped there often.

It’s like magic. Come back here in October and there is barely a sign that the fish were ever there. Bears, eagles, osprey, ravens, turkey vultures, and who knows what other animals all clean them out. The fish stage themselves at river mouth and the big trout attack then their. It’s crazy.

They come around in the evening. There are lots of huckleberries this year and bears seem to be up high eating those. But the salmon just started coming in from the lake so the bears will smell them. I only saw about 10 dead ones. That number will go up and the eagles will gather followed by bears.

I’ve read the ones in the lower west arm of Kootenay lake get bigger than other areas. They are bigger than what we used to catch in Koocanusa lake also. There were some fatties in the other creek we stopped at. Lobster mushrooms there too. Lots.

They are land locked salmon they spawn from the lake up the creeks. Only live 3-5 years I think. Never go to the ocean. This is the Kootenay Lake. No sockeye come here. Too many dams. You might be thinking of Adam’s lake, famous for Sockeye spawn.

These will die in a few days. They are leaving eggs and are at the end of life. Fishing regulations restrict seasonal fishing to about 4 Saturdays a year. Bald eagles, osprey, bears and other animals will eat the dead.

They are normally around later in the evening but I saw no bear poo at either creek I went too. The huckleberries are big and plentiful this year also so I think the bears haven’t come down. The salmon are just coming in though so I assume the smell will bring bears.
