A reproducible comparison of keyword search, AI embedding search, and their combination on 5,183 scientific abstracts and 300 judged queries, using CPU only. nDCG@10: BM25S 0.66169, MiniLM 0.64508, fixed RRF combination 0.69188. Recall@100: BM25S 0.87589, MiniLM 0.92500, fixed RRF 0.95500. Combining the methods had the strongest observed scores in this test. Recall@100 averages each query’s fraction of judged relevant documents found; it is not the percentage of all scientific papers. One collection; statistical significance was not tested.$
