She had even (an infallible mark of good reputation) been picked out to work in Pornosec, the sub-section of the Fiction Department which turned out cheap pornography for distribution among the proles. It was nicknamed Muck House by the people who worked in it, she remarked.
There she had remained for a year, helping to produce booklets in sealed packets with titles like Spanking Stories or One Night in a Girls' School, to be bought furtively by proletarian youths who were under the impression that they were buying something illegal.
"What are these books like?" said
Winston curiously.

Bret, wut
Last week, the longlists for the National Book Awards were announced. Among the 20 authors in the fiction and nonfiction categories, nearly all are straight white males.
Most are also on the political right, some even on the far right. Remarkably, mainstream media outlets haven't reported this, perhaps because they don't think it's noteworthy. It's as if we were living in 1956 rather than 2026.
If you're scratching your head at this "news," well, it's because I made it up. Or rather, I inverted the particulars about the authors' identities and their political views to make a point: If today, as a reader, you recoil at the thought of a time in which minorities were systematically marginalized when it came to the literary world's public honors (and so much else), shouldn't you also recoil now that the tables have been almost completely turned? And if you object to the right's efforts to politicize the arts, won't you also object when the efforts come from the left?

It was not enough for them to know that they now ruled a third of the world…they wanted to forget that there ever had been…any other civilisation at all. There was so much beauty they had not made, so many books they had not written, so many records of wars in which they had not fought
Hermann muttered something inaudible, but the Knight took no notice. "As I was saying, the shadows of these old ideas and of these vast old Empires still hung over Germany, reminding Germans that Empires rise, and fall, reminding them also of their own small beginnings. It was not enough for them to know that they now ruled a third of the world, that in them rested the only true and holy civilisation; they wanted to forget that there ever had been, in Europe, any other civilisation at all. There was so much beauty they had not made, so many books they had not written, so many records of wars in which they had not fought, and so many ideas of human behaviour which were anathema to them. Socialism, for instance, was absolutely smashed, practically, but the idea was still there, in men's minds. No, Alfred, I will not stop to tell you what Socialism was. You can read it in the

You're proud of having had an Empire, are you?…Look at that poor clod…there—he daren't face anything, believe anything, he hardly dares to hear anything, he's a shrinking, shaking coward, not so much because he believes in Hitler, not so much because he's a German, but because he's got an Empire!
"Ha!" cried Alfred, springing up. "There were old Empires, then? You and the Japanese weren't the only ones? It's all lies, lies!"
"The Assyrian, the Babylonian, the Persian, the Egyptian, the Greek, the Roman, the Spanish and the British. In colonial possessions-_"
Alfred interrupted him. "The British!
And you tell us all those English-speak-ing races were just disconnected savage tribes! As if anyone but an idiot could ever believe it. You liars! You fools!" The Knight rose to his feet also, and Looked at Alfred with controlled but passionate condemnation. "You're proud of having had an Empire, are you? Proud of being an Englishman for that reason?
Look at that poor clod Hermann there
— he daren't face anything, believe anything, he hardly dares to hear anything, he's a shrinking, shaking coward, not so much because he believes in Hitler, not so much because he's a German, but because he's got an Empire! You ought to be ashamed of your race, Alfred, even though your Empire vanished seven hundred years ago. It isn't long enough to get rid of that taint."

The enormous destruction of machinery that occurred in the English manufacturing districts during the first 15 years of this century, chiefly caused by the employment of the power-loom, and known as the Luddite movement, gave the anti-Jacobin governments of a Sidmouth, a Castlereagh, and the like, a pretext for the most reactionary and forcible measures. not an old theory, convinced Du Bois it was time to break ground on the ideology of antiracist socialism. In one of the 1933 articles, he described the United States as a "post-Marxian phenomenon" with a White "working-class aristocracy." At the end of the decade, Du Bois would expound on his antiracist socialism in Dusk of Dawn (1940).
"Instead of a horizontal division of classes, there was a vertical fissure, a complete separation of classes by race, cutting square across the economic layers," Du Bois put forward. The vertical cutting knife was constructed of centuries of racist ideas. "This flat and incontrovertible fact, imported Russian Communism ignored, would not discuss!"

No victorious revolution without an idea. Certainly! But just as certainly: It is not the idea that makes a revolution, but privation that causes it to break out. And once under way, it deviates from the idea.
For my Curriculum even more than for my Eighteenth Century I am forced to reflect again and again: No victorious revolution without an idea. Certainly! Only White scholars apparently could be "sufficiently restrained" to write on race: only racist studies reflected scholarly truth." From: Stamped From The Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi
Other reviews of the book, which was first released in 1883, were also favorable. But one critique from the Magazine of American History-saying that Williams was "not sufficiently restrained"-signified the conundrum that many Black revisionist scholars would face in future decades. When Black revisionists chose not to revise, then they seemingly allowed racist studies excluding or denigrating Blacks to stand for truth. When they did revise racist scholarship, they apparently lacked objectivity. Only White scholars apparently could be "sufficiently restrained" to write on race: only racist studies reflected scholarly truth."

Whatever may happen politically, inwardly I am definitively changed. No one can take my Germanness away from me, but my nationalism and patriotism are gone forever. My thinking is now completely a Voltairean cosmopol-itanism. Every national circumscription appears barbarous to me. A united states of the world, a united world economy. This has nothing to do with cultural uniformity and certainly nothing at all to do with Communism. Voltaire and Montesquieu are more than ever my essential guides.
