I don’t know about *best* book I read in 2025, but the book I thought about, referenced, and recommended the most was Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond. 190 pages, and it packs punch after punch.

Finished up with my first M.Div. class of Congregational Leadership students yesterday as a full-time faculty member at Truett Theological Seminary. As it usually goes, I learned just as much from them as (I hope) they learned from me this semester.

Today my 10 YO niece asked what this was and I immediately turned into ash and blew away in the breeze.

The new Knives Out movie is absolutely fantastic. It’s fresh on my mind, but it may be the best of the three. Themes of faith and doubt. Questions about the role of the church and its relationship to the world. Thumbs way up.

The book Good to Great changed my thinking as a pastor. But the little accompanying booklet, Good to Great and the Social Sectors, is a treasure trove. It's 35 pages (!!!) and PACKED with great insights. Absolutely essential if you're serving/leading in a non-profit/ministry setting.

It has been an honor and a joy to spend the last few days in Oxford participating in some multi-faith meetings. Grateful for the opportunity to build bridges and work towards human flourishing. The scenery and weather (wore a fleece to the airport this morning, y’all) wasn’t too shabby, either.

Y’all, all is want is fifty acres with a house and a couple of stock tanks and a creek, some honey bees, a pickup truck, and a tractor. Is that so much?? 😂 (Went to the farm show today.)

What a farewell party tonight! God did something special with our church. I’ll never take it for granted. An honor and a joy.

Happy Sunday! Today we will sing, we will pray, we will recognize a BEVY of graduating seniors, and I will preach my final sermon as pastor of HNW. Gonna be a great day in the House!

Said farewell to the greatest church staff team in the galaxy today. They are the Real Deal. Honored to have been their pastor and to call each of them friend.

I find it oddly comforting that the new pope is a baseball fan. This pic is apparently him at the 2005 WS against the Astros.

Many years ago, I had the privilege of leading my first Houston neighbor to Christ. She visited from SC on Sunday. My second Houston neighbor is now getting baptized and joined a young adult group at HNW last night. God is good.

Saddened today to hear about the passing of former Houston mayor turned US Rep Sylvester Turner. He encouraged HNW and Crossover Bible Fellowship to care for the homeless and poor in August 2017, and we had the opportunity to pray for him. We hope in the Resurrection.

One of my favorite parts of living in Houston is the annual trail rides that come from all over and converge downtown for the Rodeo. Saw one of them beside the highway today.

Just got this message from our Missions Minister. Each year for our Christmas Eve offering (The Big Give) we give away every penny we receive. This year we gave a portion to @unduemeddebt.bsky.social and they were able to pay off over $5 million in medical debt for over 4000 Houstonians! Amazing!!

An amazing two days of Christmas services at HNW Church. The gospel was proclaimed, the Lord was worshipped, people came to faith, and the Christ child was welcomed. Merry Christmas, friends.

On Sunday I was honored to oversee the licensing of nine individuals to the gospel ministry. Each of them have demonstrated a passion for the gospel of Jesus. We affirmed the call on each of their lives. We prayed over them and sent them in the name of Jesus. May they carry His gospel far and wide.

Finished Joel E Goza’s Rebirth of a Nation this morning. A dazzling documentation of how race and white supremacy developed in America and why reparations matter. This book feels seismic, similar to @kkdumez.bsky.social’s J&JW. People should be talking about this one. Hope it finds its audience.

My FIL turns 80 this year. We celebrated him tonight with steaks and coconut cake—his favorites. He was a pastor for 50 years and taught me the power of prayer and the ministry of presence. So very thankful for him.

Been in DC the last few days for meetings on religious freedom. Religious freedom is one of the most important signifiers for a nation’s health and global partnership. It’s a good thing to fight for, both at home and abroad.
