Jon Ossoff just pulled out a fiddle, turned to Collins, and said, "I told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best there's ever been."

When your bestie & fellow architectural historian goes on holiday to France, she tours Villa E-1027 and sends you these photos (also one of Gray’s E-1027 table that I requested bc I’m obsessed with it, as I also like a snack in bed/sofa but hate crumbs):
A sculptural bust of architect Eileen Gray, with a heart drawn around it and the word Eileen in red ink Le Corbusier mural at E-10127 with the phrase “Get Back in your Box Corb!” scrawled over the photo in red lettersE-1027 adjustable table designed by Eileen Gray. It is framed in shiny tubular steel with a glass top, can be easily moved, and its height is adjustable. It is positioned next to a low bed with blue cushions

The default was yellow, if i remember correctly, on iPhones, which to me means I’m not making a statement with my choice of colour. I heartily endorse anyone using any of the colours that they feel expresses their identity, but to me it feels like putting “I’M WHITE” in an emoji is…a choice.

I use the yellow one for the very same reasons. 👍

Americans living in the UK for nearly 10 years, and my husband learned that lesson in an excruciating and public way while in a high-level meeting working for a giant bank…I think he said something like “they were dogging our team for weeks” and everyone just stared at him. 😳😂

Of course, now the dog just laid a giant poo on the rug behind me while I’m working. Thanks for keeping me humble, Sally.

Having one of those moments where I’m rereading my writing from a few months ago and not only do I not hate it, I actually think it’s pretty good. More of these days, please.

I realise I’m preaching to the rest of the academic choir here but THIS.
A quote from the LA Times, from Rebecca Winthrop, senior fellow and director of the Center for University Education at the Brookings Institution: “When young people systematically use AI to complete schoolwork or other thinking tasks, they are not offloading skills they already possess. They are shortcutting the process of developing those skills in the first place.”

How about instead of AI we put all of that tech know-how and trillions of dollars into making sports bras with cups that are affixed in their proper place?

In England: our entire family can’t get an NHS dentist at all; we have a 9+ month wait for private and none take our insurance. In Scotland: daughter leaves for uni this Thursday, she scheduled an NHS dentist appointment for exam and cleaning 10 mins. from campus for next Tuesday afternoon. 😳

Rest in peace, Mr. Berry. How quietly I begin again from this moment looking at the clock, I start over so much time has passed, and is equaled by whatever split-second is present from this moment this moment is the first “Be Still in Haste” by Wendell Berry. Published in Poetry (Sept. 1962).

In PA overseas voters have to re-register every year. It’s REALLY annoying. But I will keep doing it if for no other reason than to get Fetterman out when the time comes.

The son and his first wife rewrote the 6th edition in the 1920s, which apparently was a major improvement. Unsurprisingly, her name was not included on the title page: Alice Fletcher, née Bretherton, formerly Mrs. Bamford Slack.

I always send mine tracked from the UK, and even then and with follow-up I don’t get confirmation for WEEKS afterwards. It’s so aggravating.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

3 things that would make me happy (in no particular order): 1) Generative AI disappears back into the ether. 2) Global taxes on the ultra-rich. 3) A channel that only shows Christmas episodes of television shows.

The “lyrics” feature on Spotify truly does the Lord’s work, because now I know that in the song “Popsicles and Icicles”, her boyfriend loves “Levi’s”, as opposed to “meat pies”. Also I might need better headphones. open.spotify.com/track/2s45jz...

Deep in the archives yesterday and today…questioning how Gertrude Lubbock would feel knowing that 140 years later a researcher would discover that she was a total b*tch to her father’s new (young) wife, Alice Lady Avebury? Did not need to deep dive on that but I was COMPELLED. More tea, pls, Alice!

As an alumna of two Big 10 universities, may I humbly suggest that the World Cup embrace the tradition of the traveling trophy, e.g. Paul Bunyan’s Axe? Because then we could keep the Bayeux Tapestry for at least the next four years!
