Hey parents & grandparents looking for Canadian children's books! Here's one not to miss. It's about Gander's role on 9/11. It has gorgeous illustrations from @reillyfitzgerald.bsky.social. Here's my interview with Reilly & author @nikkibergstresser.bsky.social: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-....
The cover for a children's book called "Gander The Town That Welcomed the World." The picture shows a child sitting on a rocky beach near a harbour with sheds and dories alongside the water's edge, with forested hills in the background. There's a plane in the sky.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) on CBC Radio's Newfoundland Morning, I'll speak with Tom Young @tomyqx.bsky.social, a retired air traffic controller who was on duty in Gander on 9/11, and retired CBC video journalist Kevin Harvey, one of the first reporters at Gander International Airport that day.
What appear to be wooden blocks spell out "September 11." Above is the word "Remembering." And below is "25 years later."

How do I get really close to amazing beaches in Newfoundland? I go camping. Some of the best beaches are in or near campgrounds. On Monday, on CBC Radio’s Newfoundland Morning, at about 7:40 a.m., I’ll speak with some private campgrounds, and share some stats on early bookings.
A sandy shoreline in a sheltered cove with waves rolling in from the ocean and tall green grass visible in the foreground. The sky is a blue gray colour. This is in Sandbanks Provincial Park in Burgeo. A boardwalk with wooden railing leads out onto a sandy beach. Waves are rolling in from the ocean. Sand dunes to the left have tall green grass growing on them. White wispy clouds are visible across a blue sky. This is in Shallow Bay Campground in Gros Morne National Park. The setting sun turns the sky orange over the ocean. A rocky shoreline is visible in the foreground. This is in Green Point Campground in Gros Morne National Park.Foamy white waves roll in on a sandy shore. A grassy reach of land juts out into the ocean on the left right hand side of the photo. This is in Windmill Bight Park near Lumsden.

Depends on how you want to allot your time. The Codroy Valley near PaB has hiking, birdwatching and peace. Ahhh. ☺️ The beaches along the Northeast Coast are stunning. Cape Freels and Windmill Bight are not far from New-Wes-Valley. Gros Morne is close to Bonne Bay Pond. What do you like to do?
An estuary area with a sandy beach and some tall grass on the left side. The sky is blue with a few wispy clouds. This is part of the Codroy River. Waves rolling in on a smooth sandy shoreline on a blue-sky day. This is Windmill Bight. Rock formations in a cliff face, with layers of rock exposed in ridges. Green Point has fossils that define the boundary between the Cambrian and Ordovician periods. It is a world geological benchmark.A view of Gros Morne Mountain in the distance with the waters of Bonne Bay visible on the right of the photo. The town of Woody Point can be seen on the left.

Last year, some people in the Lethbridge area of Newfoundland had to evacuate, after a fire in a bark pile at the local sawmill. Now, they're calling for changes to prevent a similar or more serious fire. Here's my interview with the Lethbridge Fire Prevention Committee: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...
A waterbomber can be seen in the sky. In the background, a plume of smoke is visible billowing up from a forested area. It is a wildfire in the community of Lethbridge, NL in September 2025.

One year ago, on Feb. 15/25, the MSC Baltic III container ship grounded in Cedar Cove, off Western Newfoundland. 20 crew members were rescued. On Friday, I co-hosted a radio special from Lark Harbour, a town of about 500 that’s changed a lot in the past year. Listen here: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

A wide angle view showing the entire grounded cargo ship, the MSC Baltic III. It came to rest one year ago on Feb. 15/25 in a cove off the West Coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Remembering the wreck of the USS Pollux and Truxtun, U.S. naval vessels from WW2 that were wrecked off Newfoundland in 1942. The people of St. Lawrence risked their lives to rescue survivors. 186 sailors survived; 203 sailors lost their lives. I visited the memorial at Chamber Cove this past summer.

Same location, a year apart. The MSC Baltic III ran aground in mid-Feb. 2025 in Cedar Cove, which is in Newfoundland, and on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Baltic III was carrying 1,600,000 litres of fuel. Fuel is slowly but surely being removed in a painstaking salvage operation. #WorldOceanDay
