something cheerful, thank goodness: the Vietnamese edition of Ways of Eating* is here, and we took it out for a sandwich. * the book on world food history and anthropology I co-wrote with my Mom, Merry White.
A copy of the Vietnamese translation of the book "Ways of Eating" sits on a restaurant counter, next to a banh mi sandwich (chicken confit mode) with a carved wooden fish looking over the scene.

There is an unplanned collusion between undergraduates devaluing humanities courses and star humanities faculty choosing to write for an imaginary general public rather than writing for other scholars.

I left public conversations about the future of technology not out of techno-pessimism but out of deep skepticism about the intellectual merit of those conversations.

It could be the color red, or it could be "loudness" in general, which men tend to avoid, or relegate it to the upper body if they indulge at all?

Yes, exactly - the only American men who had a taste for them were the (not around much now) preppies, on weekends.

One of the peculiarities of English men is their willingness to wear pink or red trousers; one of the peculiarities of American men is their unwillingness.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is my favorite of the newer Star Trek shows. It has a great sense of humor about itself and, very intelligently, de-emphasizes series-long plot arcs and stresses, instead, one-off episodes. Plus Ethan Peck is a very good Spock!

when I teach, and end up offering something advice-shaped to students, I tell them that all the mistakes I made in my education from like 15-24 had to do with wanting to accelerate.

I've met some great, quirky people who went through simon's rock (etc) or the deep springs (etc) version of college, but these kinds of schooling shouldn't be taken as generalizable models for overhauling education. And since my own precociousness was made much of, let me say: it was bad for me.

It is false that artists (musicians, writers, etc) do their best work while young, but true that few can continue to do their best work after a certain level of success and recognition. The age-related decline is an illusion; success is the real killer.

Blackwing pencils are totally worth the money, and is was not at all self-indulgent of me to pair mine with a Blackwing sharpener.

You could view it as weird that the NYT treats Harvard as though it were representative of US higher ed - or you could conclude that the NYT mostly cares about elite America, and stop expecting an equal treatment of community colleges.

Perhaps it is a cliche that the Odyssey is far more interesting - deeper into the psychic waters - than the Iliad, but it is nevertheless true.

What is grand about French cuisine is not the dishes that depend on the "mother sauces" but, instead, the very high quality of specific products - cheeses, butters, breads, sausages. You can eat better at an open-air market in Paris than in many restaurants.
