Some small town restaurants try too hard: huckleberry-glazed chicken breast, wrapped in prosciutto, with a poblano cream sauce in a trout.

Tenacious efforts by conservationists created the protected wilderness areas that I love. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is extraordinarily wild, rugged, and beautiful. My enduring gratitude to Dave Knibb and collaborators who secured its protection. www.seattletimes.com/life/outdoor...

Jev was announced a few days ago by TypeSafe AI (@typesafeai.bsky.social). It bridges the desire to ask natural-language questions, but consume answers in a structured (typesafe!) way by other programs. And do it faster and cheaper than other frontier models. typesafe.ai/blog/introdu...

Introducing System One Models & Jev - TypeSafe AI Blog
TypeSafe AI is an AI lab building machine-native intelligence infrastructure for automation, designed to make decisions within software. Try our first System One Model, Jev, in early access.

It's a new model, not an agent. And not for chat-style interactions. It allows you to ask questions in natural language (like chat) but it returns answers in a well-defined structured format, with confidence scoring, for use by software.

Wired up some vaccine refrigerator telemetry to Jev tonight. Made a hello-world for classifying faults. Initial results are promising so next step is to introduce Jev to a half terabyte of labeled telemetry data in influxdb.

I have seen small teams in sub-Saharan Africa dramatically increase their technical capacity using AI over the last 12 months. That shift is tangible (and promising) from my perspective. And that's just LLM bits, not other stuff (e.g. machine learning models for health-related challenges in LMIC).

It doesn't necessarily mean AI, but the dynamics frequently default to the Gates Foundation as the "funder of last resort", so they end up funding system sustainment in perpetuity (which isn't actually sustainable). One of the hopes with AI is that it could change this dynamic in favor of countries.

This post has become a dunk contest, but global health impacts are directly constrained by national development challenges, including the public sector technical capacity. "Just spend the money on medicine," ignores that many countries have (e.g.) barely functioning vaccine logistics systems.

The flip is the trick. I slide the half-cooked tortilla to a cutting board. Then: invert the pan over the tortilla, flip the whole mess (board+tortilla+pan), remove the board. At that point, just finish cooking the tortilla. Eat with a simple green salad.

5 or 6 med yellow potatoes, 1 onion: slice thin. 1 cup oil: n/s pan, med-low heat. Layer potato, onion, S&P. Cook, turning layers occasionally until potato pierces easily. Drain colander for 10m; reserve 2Tbsp oil. Add to 7 beaten eggs. Wait 10m. Cook med-low in oil. Flip when brown; brown +1; eat.

Spanish tortilla tonight. Ofc with onions, you base creatures.
Tortilla de España is a golden disk of egg, potato, and onion, not unlike a frittata. It rests on a rectangular cutting board, with rich browning from the pan.

This week surfaced a lot of people who are living in 2025 with respect to the capabilities of frontier AI models. Multiple posts referring to LLMs as glorified toasters is a purely ideological stance. Ethical and sociological judgments aside, the "AI:LOL" position has been overcome by events.

There is a tendency to talk (and think) about model development as happening in just a few labs, so aligning safety practices could be relatively constrained. But safety applies much more broadly than just frontier labs and hoping for 100% effective security is optimistic.

The Idaho Confederacy was stalled on SE Division, unable to take the river. The WARegon Alliance (as it came to be known) fortified the bridges, energized by a constant flow of espresso and frequent cries of "Remember Sun Valley!"

From Western Montana to Southwest Oregon, the entire PNW was cloudy and wet all weekend. I fled to east-central Idaho to meet a couple 12k mountains.
A rugged gray mountainside streaked with orange rock rises above a forested basin, with green farmland and distant ranges visible in the valley beyond.Rolling golden hills glow in low sunlight beneath a dark stormy sky, their color reflected in calm water in the foreground. Like a velveteen rabbit. Photo credit: Nate A.A gravel road lined with sagebrush leads toward a broad mountain range under a deep blue sky with puffy white clouds.A bearded man reclines against gray boulders, wearing a hooded sun shirt over a cap and bright pink pixelated novelty sunglasses. He's trying to muster the energy to be enthusiastic about sitting on the summit, but he's looking tired and disconnected. Photo credit: Nate A.

I don't even know what "older than bones" is supposed to mean and geologic time dunks have been passé since the Silurian. Anyway, here's a mountain photo from a few years ago.
A hiker in a red jacket with a large gray backpack and ice axe stands on a snowy ridgeline, looking back over his footprints toward a fog-shrouded summit. A corniced edge drops off to the right into a forested valley under heavy gray skies. He's thinking "The Adirondacks are small"

Cascades summit with kids
Three young men, resting and eating snacks on the top of a rocky mountain summit. They sit on big blocks of granite, wearing long sleeve sun shirts and climbing helmets. One man holds a bag of goldfish crackers. The other is eating pizza from a ziplock bag. These are both approved summit snacks.

A lot of the responses in this thread imply that any collaboration with Collins is a traitorous betrayal--no matter what gains to progressive interests. I'm not suggesting that's your opinion, but that's a bad take. Some seem to think this benefits Collins more than dems (also not a great take).

The current universe, current timeline. There is inertia in the rage that people feel towards our dem leadership. As a trend, it's well deserved; in specific, it distorts our judgment. This bill is pretty good on-balance, but we have so much blood in our eyes that that we only see capitulation.

Yes. That's a great thread. A lot of responses to Murray seem to have presupposed that dems would cave (and choose to see this bill through that lens). But this CR doesn't look like a dem cave. It looks smart and strategic.

Benson @benson.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
There is another interpretation here: that Collins' current political exposure is what made her the perfect selection for August's useful idiot. A CR that is heavily unbalanced in favor of progressive interests isn't really a lifeline for Collins.
