One of the biggest achievements of the labour movement in the last 20 years was winning DV leave. Would have helped save many women’s lives. Remember reporting on its first inclusion in an EBA at Surf Coast Shire Council in 2010. Was a world leading workplace right. Now available to all workers

In a vaguely just world Infantino would be forced out for the Balogun decision and FIFA cleaned up from top to bottom. I won’t hold my breath

Spent the morning laughing at how ludicrously corrupt FIFA are. And then within a few hours I forget all that and am captivated by the match of the World Cup. The sport, somehow, consistently manages to transcend how awful the people running it are.

Lovely story about post war migration, community and belonging and the role these clubs played in migrants’ lives. And also, of course, about one of the greatest players who ever lived

Football is ded to me (thanks again Holland). But this doco on SBS is a terrific watch about the improbable story of Ferenc Puskas landing in Australia and taking South Melbourne to an NSL title. Ange played for him and drove him around in a Datsun 200B. Great nostalgia trip too

Quite a lot of this type in media; addicted to attention and celebrity with no fixed principles. Just an opportunist. Read somewhere his podcast was originally pitched to be a wellness thing and then he seamlessly pivoted to far right adjacent BS as there’s more views

The first financial shock was the out-of-pocket expenses during the diagnostic phase. Then came the bills for four operations.

Setka’s links to Gatto have been publicly ventilated for years - no one in politics should be surprised by any of this

Some of the most satisfying work of my career was exposing these high end restaurant groups for wage theft. Detailed in more depth in my 2022 book Hard Labour

Ben Schneiders @benschneiders.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
There were far worse offenders in the restaurant industry than the Lucas group in terms of underpayment but none were worse to deal with In terms of pressure, aggressive tactics etc towards our reporting.

Ben Schneiders @benschneiders.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
Lucas and his external PR spivs used every trick in the book to stop the story running even though the details were pretty straight forward. His was one of many restaurant empires we exposed through those years whose business model was bolstered by wage theft

That’s a good idea. The death of local papers has been really bad for the ecosystem. Also left largely unwatched the level of government that is probably the most corrupt
110
Ben Schneiders @benschneiders.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
It really does. It needs an ecosystem of a big enough reporting staff, and an outlet willing to take the risk to do it. Only a few outlets do it at scale in my view; old Fairfax papers and ABC. Legal costs/risk a big part of it.

Ben Schneiders @benschneiders.bsky.social · 13/10/2025
Some people doing v good work as solo independent journos or part of small teams. But it’s so precarious and mostly lacks reach/impact. The reality is you still need scale and lot of money to do consistent public interest journalism
