Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 02/09/2026If you were to look cards of goons from '90 to '94 a majority of them, non-ironically, wielded gold Hull or silver Gretzky aluminums. (Although it's possibly because the manufacturer gave both guys a dozen of them for free & they gifted them bc each one of those sticks would survive nuclear winter). 000
Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I mean, somebody out there has to buy Christian sticks 000
Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 02/09/2026However, the drawbacks were obvious: 1) they were heavy, which goons found to be helpful in adding clout to their hacking, 2) they were prohibitively stiff; many goals were probably lost in that era, 3) broken wooden sticks make great lumber. I blame Gretzky and Hull, tbh. 100
Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I wish I could impart the thinking on the young ones why we did hockey aluminum sticks for awhile in the 80s/90s. For those of us with hard shots (not me), wood sticks seemed too whippy and broke too easily. For those of us with weak shots (i.e. me), we now had a stick that would last a lifetime! 100

Do I think Canada is more unfriendly because of the actions of the current U.S. President? Yes. But I don't think friendly/unfriendly neatly fits the ally/enemy spectrum. France, for example, has almost always been an unfriendly ally. 000

Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Absolutely, totally agree. It's a shame, bc among the major sports hockey is the one where there's a ready "canvas" to work with. We've certainly seen it w/goalie leg pads & gloves. I'm sure eventually there'll be a goalie that will influence a change, just like Plante, Cheevers, Dave Dryden, etc. 000

Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Mid to late 1990s was the sweet spot, where the artists were creative but still understood the average distance of their audience. Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Hot take: NHL goalie mask design these days is really bad. Way too busy with elements that only pop from 5 feet away...any further and it just looks like texture. The last consistently cool-design goalie was Jonas Hiller. Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 01/08/2026So now we have this continued wide gulf between the NHL public and stats, and it lies somewhere near "Jason Robertson is one of the slowest forwards...so what?" Benjamin Wendorf @benjaminwendorf.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Here's the thing about NHL Edge stats: they basically did what we determined was not the right thing to do, which was just record everything & report it w/o establishing the data's usefulness.
