Read through this paper last night. Was gratified to see it sync up with my own experience with collaboratively building “story games” with place makers/keepers, as the paper coins it. A good starting point for any game designer interested in community-led AR games.

The findings show how ordinary libraries can build interactive experiences that go beyond their walls, including to surface local history and marginalized voices. It identifies three models that support much wider accessibility in play and authoring, including with our Hive Mechanic engine.

The Washington National Cathedral is slowly building a scale Lego model. One of my students discovered that they have a 500k-block 3d digital model of the cathedral to guide the build & naturally asked: 1) can I have the file?, and 2) do you want a game in it? And they said yes to both! 1/2

These principles go beyond most efforts today at “user-centered” design, where the focus is on the interface - not necessarily the *system* - and rarely with the bravery to make tradeoffs in *efficiency*. (See recent work on “meaningful inefficiency” from Gordon and Mugar, 2020.)
