I have a new piece out in GSQ, co-authored with B. Reinsberg. Our paper examines how established multilateral development banks respond when new MDBs enter the field. It finds that legacy MDBs generally confront new competitors by undertaking projects within their geographical or sectoral domains.

It was a powerful event with Gordon Brown at the UoG this evening. Launching his new book, Brown energetically linked the breakdown of the rules-based international order to collapsing civic ties ('Bowling alone'). Interesting argument and food for thought!

Another interesting hour at the Book Festival. How the relationship between humans and AI will evolve over time is one of the questions I’ll keep thinking about.

Interesting event on geopolitical conflict in the Arctic and beyond at the Edinburgh International Book Festival last night. But one thing struck me: I was among the youngest people in the room. How do we get more young people interested in discussing a rapidly changing world order?

I visited the site of the Nuremberg Trials this week. Given the horrors they responded to, it's of course been difficult. At the same time, it has been reassuring. The trials show that it is possible to build international institutions that advance the cause of justice.

New article in @coco-journal.bsky.social! B. Reinsberg and I ask: does competition in the global development finance HIC improve results? Drawing on data from 30 MDBs across 144 countries, our answer is: yes, it can - at least among major development banks. Check out our piece: bit.ly/49HTEir

The @ecpr.bsky.social Joint Sessions are always an intellectual highlight. This year I co-organised the workshop “Global Governance in Times of Disruption” with @yoramhaftel.bsky.social. Incredibly rewarding. Global governance is under pressure, but research in the field has never been stronger.

A fantastic week in Brussels leading a study trip with our postgraduate IR students. Great to see them engaging directly with EU policymakers and gaining first-hand insights into decision-making, alongside thought-provoking perspectives from the FES. Many thanks to all our speakers for their time.

It was great to receive so many constructive questions and comments on our resilience in Geneva today. In these dire times, it is all the more important to continue thinking about how to turn the world into a better place. academic.oup.com/isr/article/...

My first conference trip of the year takes me to Geneva. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute some thoughts on the resilience of global governance to the event 'Multilateralism in crisis: the role of science diplomacy in turbulent times'. Deference to populist strongmen is not an option.

We have been thinking deeply about the resilience of global governance over the last years. It's great to see that our paper is now only one step away from publication. We offer a novel conceptualization of institutional resilience and theorize what makes global governance resilient. Stay tuned!
