Who has the launch codes at midnight, Adam? 🫣
Rep. Adam Kinzinger & • Follow

Picture the White House a little before midnight on a Tuesday. The West Wing is dark. The press office is empty. The staff who will spend tomorrow answering for tonight have gone home to their families. Across the White House grounds, Secret Service officers are standing their posts in the cold.
Upstairs, one light is still on.
The most powerful man in the world is alone with his phone. Nobody is reading over his shoulder.
Nobody is asking whether this one should wait until morning. There is no one left in the building whose job is to say, "Best not to send that, sir."
Now picture the rest of the country a few hours later.
Alarms go off in bedrooms from Maine to Arizona.
Before the coffee is made, before anyone checks the weather, millions of people reach for their phones and do something that has sadly become a habit over the last 10 years: they check to see what the President did while they were asleep.
Some of them are bracing for it. Some of them are just tired.
It started in the evening. The President shared real footage of a young man named William Chapman in his final moments, as he was attacked and killed by a tiger at a wildlife park in England. Trump sent it to his millions of followers with a caption: "Don't ever mess with nature!"
A little later, he posted a montage of lions attacking people, set to upbeat music. Then, close to midnight, came a video generated by artificial intelligence. In it, Donald Trump chases a tiger across a lawn, tackles it, and then rolls around playing with it, smiling, while "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" plays in the background. It was, in effect, a parody of a man's death, with the President cast as the hero.
Just after midnight, he moved on to Greenland.
"Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!" he wrote.
William Chapman's family has said he suffered from significant mental illness for years. They were still grieving a young man who had struggled for a long time, and they had to watch his last moments become viral content. I'm not going to describe that footage, and l'd ask you not to go looking for it. He deserved better, and so does his family.
In Greenland, a government official had to go on CNN and correct the President. Greenland banned new oil exploration back in 2021, and the security agreement signed last month didn't hand over any rights to drill or mine. "We are very far away from 'massive' exploration," Greenland's deputy mining minister said.
I've been thinking a lot about how to describe what it feels like to live through nights like this one.
Citizens of a healthy democracy aren't supposed to wake up afraid of what their own leader did while they slept. You're supposed to be able to disagree with your president and still trust that he is mentally and emotionally stable enough to not wake you up with something cruel or unhinged.
That basic expectation is gone. The dread is bad enough. But worse is the numbness that comes after it. Every night like this one pushes the boundaries of what we think of as normal.
What happened on Tuesday night should stop our country cold. Instead, for a lot of people, it was one more strange headline on a Wednesday, scrolled past on the way to something else.
I have a little boy at home. He's going to grow up with some idea of what a president is supposed to be, the same way I did. I don't want this to be the picture that shapes his thinking into adulthood. I don't want any kid to think the most powerful person in the country is supposed to act like this, or that it's normal for the adults around him to just shrug and move on.
And there's a deeper loss, too. In our worst moments as a country, the president used to be the person who held us together.
Ronald Reagan speaking to the nation's schoolchildren the day the Challenger exploded.
Barack Obama in a Charleston church, pausing his eulogy to sing "Amazing Grace" until the whole congregation sang with him. Whatever you thought of their politics, they knew that part of the job was carrying the country's grief.
We've gotten so used to living without a president who comforts us that we've almost forgotten we ever had one.
Look, every president has bad moments. So does every one of us.But every airplane I flew in the Air Force had a crew and a checklist, because even the best pilot gets tired, and one person's worst moment should never be allowed to become everyone's disaster. And this presidency has nobody there to stop the worst instincts of an increasingly erratic man.
That's why the dread so many people feel in the morning isn't hysteria. It's a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation.
So here's what I'd ask of you: don't get used to this.
Don't let the numbness win. The moment a president posting a stranger's death at midnight stops bothering you is the moment the people who want this to feel normal have gotten exactly what they wanted. Hold on to the part of you that still flinches. That's your conscience doing its job.
And remember what normal felt like, so you'll be able to demand it of the next president.
I know that presidents can be honest without being perfect. They can disagree with you without frightening you. They can comfort a grieving country instead of adding to its pain. We had that, and we can have it again.
There's a good chance that late tonight, the light will be on upstairs at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
That part, for now, isn't up to us.
But how we wake up tomorrow, and the kind of country we decide to be in November, still is.
- Adam

I write, read and talk about more than enough of the craziness coming out of the United States these days.
Some of it makes me angry, some of it leaves me shaking my head, and some of it is so absurd that I can barely believe we're having the conversation. But every once in a while, something comes along that goes well beyond political disagreement or disbelief. Something so profoundly disturbing that I genuinely struggle to comprehend it.
This is one of those moments.
Nidal Hasan, a former United States Army major and psychiatrist, was convicted of murdering 13 people and wounding 32 others at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. It was a horrific crime that destroyed lives and families.
He was sentenced to death.
I oppose capital punishment. But this post is not about whether I agree with the death penalty. Nor is it about whether Hasan deserves the punishment imposed by a military court.
What I am struggling to comprehend is the information circulating that his execution, reportedly scheduled for December 3, will be carried out by firing squad and livestreamed.
Livestreamed? Are they seriously considering this..
I can understand that some people believe justice demands his execution. I can even understand, although I cannot agree, that a firing squad is an acceptable means of carrying it out. But who wants to watch? Seriously. Who are the spectators? Who marks December 3 on a calendar, makes sure they're in front of a screen at the appointed hour, and settles in to watch another human being shot to death? And why?To what end?

As I struggle to make sense of this, my mind goes in directions I almost wish it wouldn't. Hasan is Muslim. A Muslim who committed a horrific crime, but a Muslim nonetheless. Does his religion have anything to do with the manner in which his execution is reportedly being planned? I have absolutely no evidence that it does. But I cannot help wondering. Does the choice of a firing squad somehow reflect the United States' deeply entrenched gun culture? Again, I don't know. Perhaps neither question has anything to do with this. But these are the thoughts that come when I try to understand something that seems so profoundly disturbing.
And then there is another thought that I find almost too grotesque to contemplate. We are living in an era when political success in the United States is so often measured by crowd sizes, television audiences and boasts about the biggest and the best. Whether it's a presidential rally or a proposed UFC fight on the White House lawn, the numbers seem to matter enormously.
So what happens on December 4? Do we wake up to an announcement about how many people watched a man die? Will someone tell us it was the largest audience ever? The biggest? The most watched? My God. Have we reached a point where even an execution could become another event measured by its audience?I am going to continue to hope that some of the information being circulated is simply wrong. That somewhere along the way, something has been misunderstood, misstated or announced without anyone stopping to consider what it actually means.
And if the intention really is to livestream this execution, I can only hope that someone, somewhere, will have the decency and good judgment to put an end to that part of it before December 3. Surely that is not too much to ask.
Canada has its own troubling history of executions, including soldiers killed by firing squad during the First World War. We eventually chose a different path. The United States did not, and I recognize that its laws are different from ours. But surely there must be a distinction between carrying out a legal sentence and inviting the public to witness the moment a human life ends.
For most of my life, I have regarded the United States as a country much like my own. Different politics, different laws, certainly. But a country whose people shared many of the same fundamental values of human dignity and decency. I am finding that belief increasingly difficult to reconcile with what I see happening.
I try, in most of my writing, to stand in the light rather than the darkness. Even when I am critical, even when I am angry, I try to find something that gives me hope for where we might be going. But this one is different. I have searched for that light in this story, and I simply cannot find it. Perhaps that is why I am struggling so much to understand not only the idea of broadcasting an execution, but the possibility that there are people who would actually want to watch.I am not asking anyone to feel sympathy for Nidal Hasan. I am asking whether we have lost the ability to recognize that even when a life is taken as punishment, there should be some measure of human dignity left in the process.
Because I am no longer asking what kind of government would broadcast an execution. I think we know the answer to that.
I am asking what kind of society would want to watch.
And I find that question more frightening than / can put into words.

Globe & Mail investigation finds that MAGA operatives were in Alberta this year to assist the separatists. Handing over 10X Votes-electoral mining software developed for the GOP that the Alberta separatists were "blown away" by.
Those at the January meeting in Calgary included Drew Wierda, founder of 10X Votes, who's the nephew of Erik Prince, prominent Trump insider / owner of Blackwater, the notorious private military contractor. Also present, Alberta separatist leader, David Parker, who was instrumental to Alberta PM Danielle Smith's 2022 win; rallying the arch conservatives that elevated her to Premier.
In April, a separatist delegation went to D.C. where it was met with "huge support at the highest levels of the administration". They offered up Alberta's rich resource portfolio-water, agriculture, forestry, mining, precious metals and oil—in exchange for help with their secession efforts. The U.S. could facilitate Alberta's transition to independence by providing a $500 billion USD line of credit to finance the shift and by funding new oil pipelines into the U.S.
After the meetings, David Parker launched a political organization that used 10X Votes tech.
This resulted in the massive April privacy breach of "highly sensitive" data of millions of voters, alarming Canada's security agencies. In May, PM Danielle Smith announced an Oct 19th referendum. With separatist factions touting the prospect of American support for Alberta's independence, high level Republicans including Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, made the rounds on US news shows to bolster Alberta's secession scheme. Jeff Cotter

Pierre Poilievre is way down in the polls. The Liberals are well ahead.
And today, instead of letting Canadians celebrate a massive Canadian energy project, Pierre rushed to social media to attack it.
This is what Pierre does.
He finds something that should be good news for Canada, strips away the context, finds the angriest possible way to describe it and puts that in front of Canadians.
Today it was LNG Canada.
He shared a photo from a CBC story about Chinese steel being used in part of the $33 billion Phase 2 expansion.
But he didn't share the context.
Instead, he called it Beijing "dumping" steel into one of Canada's biggest infrastructure projects.
That word matters.
"Dumping" isn't just some throwaway word.
It is the same language we've been hearing from the Trump administration as it tries to portray Canada as a dumping ground for Chinese steel and use that as justification for attacking Canadian steel and putting tariffs on our country.Canada has been dealing with Chinese steel overcapacity and unfair trade practices.
In 2024, Canada put a 25% surtax on specified Chinese steel and aluminum.
In 2025, Canada went further.
We put another 25% surtax on certain steel entering Canada from other countries when that steel had actually been melted and poured in China.
We tightened steel import quotas.
We have been taking action against the very problem Pierre is pretending Canada is simply ignoring.
So when Pierre uses the word "dumping" here, we shouldn't just gloss over it.
He's taking a legitimate discussion about where some specialized steel components are manufactured and turning it into a much bigger story about China dumping steel into Canada.
And he's doing it at a time when the United States is already using that exact narrative against us.
Now look at what the CBC story actually says.
LNG Canada says these enormous modules require specialized fabrication capabilities that currently aren't available in Canada.
There are only a handful of facilities anywhere in the world capable of doing this work.
And the Chinese fabrication is only part of the picture. The other 70% of the steel will be Canadian.
That's what Buy Canadian is supposed to be about.
Use Canadian when we can.
At a time when Canada is fighting to protect our economy from an American administration that is actively trying to put pressure on us, you'd think the leader of Canada's official opposition would understand the importance of building confidence in this country.
Instead, he takes a Canadian success and immediately looks for a way to make Canadians angry about it.
And that's why I keep saying this isn't happening in a bubble.
The Liberals are ahead.
Pierre is struggling badly in the polls.
And now he's using language that reinforces an American narrative being used to justify attacks on Canada.
I don't think Canadians should be helping anyone tear down confidence in this country right now.
This is a $33 billion Canadian LNG expansion.
Canadians should be allowed to celebrate that without Pierre Poilievre immediately trying to turn it into another reason to be angry.A picture of the smuggest mug in Canada - the poster boy for Pipsqueak - Poillievre

It’s quite literally written as the “tRump Corollary” to the *Monroe Doctrine* in the 2025 release of his regime’s National Security Strategy. They’re not trying to hide it. #NaziExpansionism #ViolatingSovereignty #Project2025

No due process for a HUMAN who entered the USA legally, has a work permit & was WORKING when confronted &shot in the back by ICE. No adequate medical care, no compassion, no HUMANITY. Wilber belongs in a hospital bed, NOT a concentration camp. #F@ckNazis #NOTaShiningBeacon

Wilber came to this country legally. He has no criminal record.
An ICE agent shot him anyway.
He slept on a prison cell floor with a bullet still lodged in his back. He can't move the left side of his body.
This isn't law enforcement. It's lawlessness.

So proud 🇨🇦 on the right side of history. Also thankful we figured it out on time &elected PM Mark Carney. Hopeful PMMC’s support is at 70%, in spite of foreign interference efforts to sway 🇨🇦against him. 🇨🇦doesn’t suffer war criminals or Nazis, so glad that still stands today. #ANTIFAForever 🇨🇦 ❤️ 🇺🇦

Say what, now? 🤨
Ontario NDP

Trump declares a trade war on Ontario - and Doug Ford is building our new subway cars in Maryland, making teachers buy their classroom supplies at American-owned Staples, and paying a Texas company to maintain our highways.
The legislature is sitting empty while this happens.

Marit Stiles is calling on Doug Ford to recall it now and:
Cancel U.S. contracts
V Stop U.S. data centre deals
V Back Ontario forestry
V Buy Canadian vehicles
Put Buy Ontario First into law
Our money should be building Ontario jobs, full stop.

Go to CancelUSContracts.ca and sign the petition if you agree Fl

Ontario's
order for new subway trains could be hit by Canadian counter-tariffs

Isaac Callan - August 26, 2026

Canada's retaliatory tariffs on products from the United States could significantly increase the cost of driverless trains currently on order by the provincial government for the Ontario Line in Toronto. In 2022, Infrastructure Ontario signed a $9 billion contract with a consortium of companies, including Hitachi Rail, to provide trains, rolling stock and maintenance for the Ontario Line, a new downtown relief subway route in Toronto.

@chrisglover

Ford's favouring of American corporations is going to cost taxpayers.
In 2022, Ford snubbed Ontario manufacturer Alstom & signed a deal for Ontario Line rail cars to be built by Hitachi Rail in Maryland.
Ford not only sent our jobs & tax dollars to the US, now we may have to pay counter-tariffs on these rail cars.Chris Glover is in Toronto. •

Doug Ford sent a $9 billion contract for Ontario Line trains to the States, and cut Ontario content rules from 25% to 10%.
You can't claim to be "Captain Canada" while sending Canadian jobs to the U.S.

Don’t know what’s left that’s safe to eat for 🇺🇸s.😔 Between recalled Argentinian beef, halting all inspections, imported mystery meat, screwworms, prions, cyclospora in the produce, glyphosphates &now cancer causing pesticide on *everything*, there’s nothing left. So much winning

BREAKING: Trump's EPA has approved the use of a pesticide and known carcinogen, trifludimoxazin.
The forever chemical will now be used on corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, oranges, apples, peanuts, and almonds.

There’s too many easy choices that would work, if 🇨🇦renamed our side of Lake Ontario. I’d much rather make it a 🇨🇦hero, Like Lake Downey or Lake Fox, but we can always rename it in a few years, once 🍊Führer’s in the dirt,🤷‍♀️ A few that should make the blood boil (and ketchup get thrown) :

We are staring down a klepto psychopath who is being egged on at every level by the power structure of the USA. They aren't joking.
